How do Fishermen Catch Fish?
Fishing is the act of catching fish from the water. The process involves baiting, capturing, and pulling in the catch. There several methods that the anglers can learn to fish. They can be classified into traditional methods and modern fishing methods.

Traditional Methods of Fishing
Old fishing methods were practiced in the later eras before any advancements in the process were made. These processes include:
Spearing
As the name suggests, it employs the use of sharp objects such as spears to catch and kill fish. It requires a lot of training and experience to get it right. It can be classified both in the traditional method and a modern method of fishing as it still used to fish for large prey in the deep seas. However, the new method employs the use of gun mechanisms, which makes it accurate and reliable.
Fish Traps
These are traps made from sticks or woven baskets that are used to catch fish. They have a one-way opening made such that, when the fish swims in to get the bait or passing through, it cannot come out again. Mostly used for small-scale fishing.
Using Chemicals
Although an illegal practice, it still gets used in some areas. It is a derogative way that pollutes the water and has negative effects on marine life. The chemicals used make the fish drowsy or kills them. They end up floating and are collected as the catch.
Modern Methods of Fishing
The modernized methods of fishing are mostly for commercial purposes and done in the deep seas. They are aimed at increasing the volume of catch. They include:
Angling
Also known as line fishing as it involves the use of fishing rod and a line. The process uses a single baited gook to lure the fish. A reeling mechanism on the end of the rod is used for reeling in the catch. It can be used by hobbyists and anglers ding it commercially.
Trawling
Methods practiced this deep fishing in the deep oceans. A boat or two pulls a bag-shaped net under the water. The net traps and collects the fish and they are pulled into the boat.
Gill Nets
Another commercial fishing method used to catch fish in the open seas or lakes. It uses a vertical net kept in position by use of floaters and sinkers at the bottom. The net forms a wall-like structure in water and when fish swim through, they are caught in several ways. They can be wedged where the fish is held around the body. It can also be gills where the fish is caught on the opercula, which act as the gill covers or are tangled by any protrusion, scales, or fins.

Purse Seine
Involves two boats that drag behind a vertical net as in gill nets to fish. The difference comes when pulling in the catch. A cable on the top and the bottom of the line is pulled to form a bag enclosing the fish in the middle.
Longline
A commercial fishing method carried out in the deep sea. It involves a long line with multiple baited hooks dragged behind the boat. The fish bite on the bait it is caught. The line is then pulled back to the ship to collect the catch.
Each of the methods has its advantages and disadvantages depending on the type of fish species you intend to catch or the area of use.
Hence, pick your best method and let us catch some fish.
