How To Pick And Pack Light

Why, you ask? Because I know too well what it's like to experience the ups and downs of the global economy. I have been down in the dumps before - many times my family and I have been forced to uproot and go elsewhere because of unstable political and economic climates. Not only do we pack our bags and head for the other side of the world, we also ship out all of our belongings and leave our homes behind. I know the feeling. I've lived in many different parts of the US and have loved every moment of it, both good and bad (mostly bad) but I've turned a new leaf and joined the thousands of people moving west into the warm climate and bright lights of the southern United States.

My husband and I met in graduate school in the early 1980s. fulfillment were avid book readers who were always thrilled when new books came out that captured our interest. As we settled into our lives here in the States, we quickly discovered that the best way to travel was to simply pack our bags and hit the road! Going on an adventure in the US was just what we needed to blow away our blues - or at least that's what we thought. In hindsight, we realized that adventure was just another way of saying we were unhappy.

So we packed our bags and hit the road. A few months later we arrived in Salt Lake City and immediately hitched a ride with our good friends from the University of Utah. Our enthusiasm quickly cooled as soon as we saw that the US was not all that it was cracked up to be. The culture shock of living amongst people half our age was difficult to overcome, especially since it was such a new and different place. Despite this we persevered and within a year we were packing again.

Now, almost twenty years later we are living in a beautiful house in Utah. We have a wonderful, caring, humorous adult child and are surrounded by friends of all ages. We chose to live in Utah because it offers great opportunities for hiking, surfing, sailing, snowboarding and outdoor activities. We made a commitment to ourselves to pack our bags when going backpacking in order to avoid having the mindset of settling. And so our new approach to packing became very relevant when we moved into our home based pick and pack company in Salt Lake City.

One of the things that make home-based pick and pack companies so appealing is their flexibility of approach to packing for an entire family. For example some home-based companies offer members of the family a "family pack" option where each member picks a specific item and brings it with them for the trip. Other companies offer "family packs" that include more than one item that may be needed for a trip. There are also companies who offer a "permaview" service where a member of the family goes into the store with a list of items they would like to bring and get their feedback on which items they would like to bring. This allows the family to come together as a group and makes it easier for us to discuss what we might need for a particular trip ahead.

When my husband and I started our home based pick and pack company in Salt Lake City, we had no experience with either of these approaches. It was hard to decide on what type of packing to do for our first trips. We realized very early on though that packing light was important in order to save money. So after researching our options we decided on a plan that had us packing only two items: our carry-on luggage and necessities for our planned adventure. This was perfect for us since we knew that neither of us had a lot of extra clothing or gear with us.

So as the weeks went by and we didn't get any bad weather or unforeseen expenses, we began to research how other families were packing for their family. We discovered that the most important item to always have on hand was a flashlight. Many people tend to pack far too much for a single trip and don't have any way to get their flashlight back home. This is why I recommend you always carry a flashlight with you for any trip that you take, no matter what the destination may be.

In summary, my suggestion is that if you are interested in learning how to pick and pack light, then I encourage you to research other families who are successful with their home based pick and pack businesses. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty and pack light for one week. If you never do this, you'll never know whether you're actually able to pack light when you travel. You will also be able to see for yourself how other families manage to pack for their journeys. In fact, you may find that your experience can help lead you in the right direction.
