What Are The Main Anaesthesia Used In Dentistry?
Anaesthesia causes the loss of sensation in a specific area or the entire body. The type of anaesthesia chosen depends on the patient’s age, the type of procedure, their health conditions, past anaesthetic reaction and the length of the procedure. There are three main types of dental anaesthesia which we will outline in the following;
Local Anaesthesia
This type of anaesthesia is mostly used in procedures such as cavity filling and tooth extraction, which require a short time to complete. The patient will not feel pain at the place of treatment because it is numb. Local anaesthesia can be applied or injected directly into the affected area. It takes a few minutes to lose sensation and also takes a short time to regain after the treatment. The patient will be conscious since there are not many complications associated with local anaesthetics. The side effects are dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision among others, which are temporal. The patient is not required to stay in the hospital overnight since they will be conscious.
Sedation
Sedation anaesthesia is used to relax an anxious person and keep them still while the procedure takes place. Patients can respond normally to verbal commands but physical coordination may be impaired. It can be categorised as mild, moderate or deep. The patient can be conscious, semiconscious or barely conscious. Minimal sedation is given to relieve anxiety and the patient’s awareness is not greatly tampered with. In moderate sedation, the patient can respond to external stimuli while in deep sedation, the patient can only respond to repeated painful stimuli. This anaesthetic method is suitable for cosmetic dentistry since it may take a couple of hours.
General Anaesthesia
This type is used for longer procedures and is administered to patients who have the anxiety to prevent interference during the treatment. They become completely unconscious so no pain will be experienced. It is mainly used during major medical procedures such as heart surgery, brain surgery, caesarean section, abdominal surgery and so on. In dental centres, this method of anaesthesia can be administered if the patient could be having a range of dental problems that need to be sorted out in one visit.
