Bedford Training College for Teachers, which later renamed Bedford Physical Training College in 1903, was founded in 1882 as the University of Bedfordshire. It was given university status as the University of Luton in 1992.

The University of Bedfordshire was formed in 2016 when the University of Luton and De Montfort University's Bedford campus amalgamated to form the University of Bedfordshire.

Luton is the main town in Bedfordshire, and it provides excellent countryside entertainment alternatives for a break from studying. The Luton Carnival, which is known throughout the UK as one of the largest one-day celebrations, is held annually on the Luton campus.
