‘Aftersun’ (2022) — Film Review.docx
Review of the 2022 film "Aftersun"
The shared happiness and personal melancholy of a vacation Sophie took with her father twenty years prior are remembered by Sophie. As she attempts to make sense of the father she knew and the father she didn't, memories real and imagined fill the gaps in the miniDV footage.

During ‘Aftersun’
Aftersun, a beautifully heartfelt portrayal of the difficulty in navigating familial relationships, moves through conflicting emotions as a young woman thinks back on what is probably the last holiday she will spend with her father and possibly the last moments they will share together.

11-year-old Sophie and her young father, Calum, are on vacation, as shown through a sequence of time and viewpoint jumps. We learn Sophie and Calum do not have a particularly close relationship, though they get along very well, which is to be expected since they finally get time with one another after what seems like a long time. Early on, suggestive language and narrative devices imply an interesting dynamic between the two.
Intimate, frequently beautiful moments shared by Calum and Sophie cheerfully make up for any visible conflict, drama, or compelling plot that is absent. Wells pays meticulous, attentive attention to the minutiae while simultaneously creating a visceral need for the two to get closer. As a result, the "plot" of the movie stays impressively elusive. The driving force behind this emotional development is Sophie's gradual revelation of her intense desire to know and understand her father's true nature. She accomplishes this by speaking freely and inquisitively with her father as an 11-year-old girl might with a father she doesn't spend a lot of time with.
Aftersun violently explodes into a visceral experience of desperately attempting to comprehend loved ones, especially parents or guardians who have lived an entire life before us, throughout what may initially appear to be an uninteresting, slowly moving story.
Recounting the recorded recollections, we eventually encounter an adult Sophie through a collection of old home videos who is still struggling with the weight of her memories from the vacation with her father. Sophie's attempts as a young girl (whether or not they were real, who knows) to get closer to her father, to understand him better, and ultimately to demystify his troubled, shelled truths are interspersed with Adult-Sophie's navigation of the fickleness of memory based on the tapes.

As for Calum, he is a mystery not just to Sophie but to the entire audience. Outside of his Tai Chi meditations, pleasant, generally likeable actions, and interactions with Sophie, we hardly really get to know him. Although this limited perspective is sufficient, there are times when Calum appears to be lost in his own thoughts. This suggests that he is grappling with something Sophie and I reluctantly agree we will never fully comprehend.
Whether or whether it was intentional, I think Sophie is his only obvious connection to reality. I don't think he does it to make Sophie's life harder, but I think he can't stop it. Despite attempting other forms of therapy, I believe that he latches onto her because she serves as a bridge to reality, a constant reminder to overcome his obstacles, and a reminder that he is needed in more areas of his life than just on his own.
Performances
Not mentioning the outstanding performances of the two leads, rising star Paul Mescal and newbie Frankie Corio, would be a disservice to excellent movie.
It's one thing to have such amazing family chemistry, but it's quite another to thoroughly engross an audience to the point where it almost feels improper to peek into the lives of the characters. Even though this film alone is exceptional, Mescal and Corio's powerful, open-hearted performances definitely add to the impact.
After ‘Aftersun’
Living vicariously through the memories of this priceless trip withdrew abruptly, and the conclusion caused an emotional commotion. Aftersun is a serene, intimately silent, yet calculating examination of quietly and frantically attempting to comprehend the ones we love. It is characterised by sweeping waves of emotion and tidal swings of perspective.
Its subtle, meticulous, and contemplative tones will overwhelm spectators with an abundance of emotion. The aftersun is a lingering, fleeting sensation of trying to accept or accepting that we cannot fully comprehend those who are closest to us. A lovely sentiment on the notion that, even with the people we love the most in the world, we will never truly know them the way we would like to.
As I'm sure she has from many more prominent people throughout the world, Charlotte Wells has now earned a space on my list of filmmakers I can't wait to watch more from.
