So Long, Brooklyn! 7 Things to Think About Before You Move Out

Its never too late to relocate Shot of a mature couple unpacking boxes on moving dayBig news! I'm packing up and heading out of Brooklyn. Yeah, after all those epic brunches in Williamsburg, lazy afternoon strolls in Prospect Park, and those countless times dodging pigeons in Fort Greene, it's time for a new chapter. And this next chapter’s got me moving to Chicago.

Moving is a huge deal and so for anyone in Brooklyn thinking about shaking things up and moving elsewhere, here's my list of the 7 big things I considered before deciding to make the move:

1. Cost of Living

Rent in Brooklyn takes a big chunk out of your wallet, and don't even get me started on fancy coffees. So, research your new city! Will your salary stretch further? Can you finally afford that in-unit washer and dryer you've always dreamed of?

2. Movers

Saying goodbye to Brooklyn means saying goodbye to your favorite bodega cat and probably most of your furniture. Unless you're packing light and have a super strong back, you'll need movers. Interstate moves can get pricey, so get quotes from a few different companies. I went with Movers Not Shakers (they came recommended by a friend), and they seemed to have good rates and reviews.

3. Job Market

This one's a biggie. Is your current career a good fit in your new city? Do some research on the job market there. Maybe you need to update your resume or reach out to some local companies beforehand.

4. Community Vibes

Brooklyn is a melting pot of cultures and personalities. What kind of vibe are you going for in your new place? A bustling downtown scene? A quiet, tree-lined neighborhood? Take some virtual tours and maybe even plan a visit to get a feel for the different areas.

5. Hidden Costs

Moving isn't just about the truck rental. Factor in things like parking permits, deposits on your new place, and maybe even buying some boxes (trust me, free pizza boxes only go so far).

6. Saying Goodbye

Brooklyn holds a special place in my heart, and I know I'll miss my friends and favorite haunts. But this doesn't have to be a permanent goodbye! Plan a going-away party, exchange contact info, and vow for epic video calls (or better yet, future visits!).

7. Embrace the New!

Moving is a chance for a fresh start. Explore your new city, find your new favorite coffee shop (or bodega!), and embrace the adventure. Brooklyn will always be a part of your story, but there are new chapters waiting to be written!

So, there you have it! These are just a few things I considered before my big move. Is anyone else out there contemplating leaving Brooklyn? Share your thoughts and questions in the comments below!
