**0545 Hours (5:45 AM)** --- *The Regal Cinema had become a warzone.* *The drone strikes from Phase One had torn through the building's upper structure, collapsing sections of roof and walls, creating a maze of rubble, twisted steel, and shattered concrete. What had once been a modern multiplex theater was now a post-apocalyptic hellscape where every corridor was a potential killbox and every theater offered both cover and death.* The S.C. operators had fallen back to the cinema after their position at* **a certain shopping mall that i wil not say because i dont want to get sued** *became untenable—too many federal teams converging, too many angles to cover. The cinema at least gave them the vertical advantage of multiple levels and the complexity of dozens of small rooms connected by narrow hallways.* *Theater by theater, hallway by hallway,* **HRT and the remaining S.C. operators tore each other apart with savagery.** *The Americans pushed with overwhelming power, using ballistic shields, coordinated fire teams, proper room clearing—while the S.C. forces fought a desperate retreating battle, trading space for time, hoping for extraction that probably wasn't coming.* **Kira was alone now.** *She'd gotten separated from the rest of her team during the fighting. One moment she'd been with Sarah and Marcus, the next moment HRT had pushed hard from multiple angles and everyone scattered. Now she was positioned in Theater 12, the farthest theater from the main lobby, pressed behind a section of collapsed concrete that had once been part of the exterior wall.* *Her SR-16 was up, her breathing ragged through her half-mask, her cracked ribs screaming with every movement. She popped around the corner and squeezed off bursts of suppressive fire down the hallway toward the advancing HRT teams.* **CRACK. CRACK. CRACK. CRACK. CRACK.** *Her rounds sparked off ballistic shields, doing absolutely nothing to stop the advance. The shields were* **Level III+** *at minimum, probably* **Level IV.** *Her 5.56mm ammunition wasn't going to penetrate unless she got lucky with a ricochet or caught someone in an exposed area.* *The HRT operators moved like an unstoppable force. Shields forward, rifles tracking over and around them, advancing in careful bounds..* "FALLING BACK!" *That was David's voice over the radio, strained and desperate.* "IM MOVING TOWARDS YO-" *His transmission cut off with gunfire.* *Kira risked another peek. Her red dot found the gap between two shields, saw a figure in tactical gear.* **CRACK CRACK CRACK** *She fired another burst. More sparks off the shields. More return fire forcing her back. Her rifle's bolt locked back.* **Empty.** "Shit shit shit-" *Kira dropped the empty magazine, reached for a fresh one on her chest rig. Her hands found empty pouches. She'd burned through her load. She grabbed for her dump pouch where she'd been storing used magazines and found one that felt like it had rounds in it. Slammed it home, hit the bolt release. *She leaned out to fire.* **The rifle clicked. Failure to feed. The round hadn't chambered properly.** "What the FUCK?!" *Kira ducked back as return fire tracked her position. She performed a tap-rack-bang drill. slapped the magazine, racked the charging handle to clear the malfunction, squeezed the trigger again.* **Click. Still jammed.** "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?* *She dropped behind cover completely, her hands working frantically to clear the malfunction. Had to be a double-feed or something caught in the chamber. She needed time to strip the magazine out and properly clear it but time was something she didn't have.* *The gunfire intensified. She heard American voices shouting tactical commands:* **"MOVING!" "SET!" "UP!"** *She popped back around the corner to reengage.* *Kira's wolf ears twitched. She heard something else.* **A wet, gasping sound.** *From the theater entrance, maybe fifteen meters away.* **She risked a glance around the pillar.** *David lay in the hallway just outside the theater entrance, face-down in a spreading pool of blood. His rifle was still in his hands but he wasn't moving. Wasn't breathing. Multiple gunshot wounds visible even from this distance. He'd been caught in the hallway during his retreat, probably never saw it coming.* **Her heart dropped.** *Movement to the left. **Another S.C. operator, it looked like Lin from her smaller frame and cat ears.** She was down but not dead, dragging herself across the blood-soaked carpet toward Kira's position. One hand reaching out, the other trying to push her body forward. Her mouth moved, blood bubbling from her lips as she tried to form words.* "Help..." *The sound was barely audible over the sustained gunfire.* "Help..." *Kira wanted to move..wanted to break cover to pull Lin to safety—* **The HRT operators opened fire.** *Lin's body jerked as rounds punched through her.* **Once. Twice. Five times. Ten times.** *She was face-down on the carpet and the impacts literally flipped her over, rolling her onto her back as more rounds tore through her body armor, through her flesh.* *She stopped moving.* *Kira's ears pinned flat against her head. A snarl built in her throat, low, animalistic, full of rage and grief and helpless fury. Her lips pulled back from her fangs. Her hands tightened on her rifle until she thought the polymer furniture might crack.* "SARAH!" *She screamed into her radio.* **"GRENADE! I NEED A FUCKING GRENADE!"** "Can't see you!" *Sarah's voice came back, somewhere else in the theater complex.* "Where—" **"JUST THROW IT! DOWN THE MAIN HALLWAY! NOW!"** *A pause. Then:* **"GRENADE OUT!"** *Kira saw it. A dark object rolling across the carpet from some position she couldn't see. The M67 fragmentation grenade bounced once, twice, rolling toward the advancing HRT stack.* **"GRENADE!"** *Multiple voices screamed simultaneously.* **"TAKE COVER! GRENADE!"** *The hallway was too narrow, too confined. There was nowhere to go that would provide adequate protection from the blast radius. The HRT operators tried to backpedal, tried to get distance-* **One operator stepped forward instead.** *Kira saw him move—saw him deliberately advance toward the grenade rather than away from it. He drew his leg back and kicked it with everything he had, trying to send it back toward the S.C. positions.* *It worked. For about half a second.* *The grenade skittered maybe two meters down the hallway. Then it detonated.* *The explosion in the confined space was devastating. The blast wave rolled over the HRT team. Shrapnel tore through the air in every direction.* **The operator who'd kicked it took the worst of it.** *The blast caught his right leg just below the knee, the shaped fragmentation punching through his tactical pants and literally destroying everything below the joint. Bone shattered. Flesh vaporized..* *He went down screaming, his voice raw with shock and agony.* **"Ah.. ahm... AGHHHHGHHH!!!!"** **"MEDIC! FUCK! MEDIC!"** *His body thrashed on the carpet, hands reaching for the ruined stump of his leg, blood pumping from severed arteries. A lake of it spreading beneath him.* "KOWALSKI! MEDIC! KOWALSKI'S DOWN!" *A blonde female operator, Kira recognized her from earlier, the one who'd been part of the team that killed **Berlin and Fresh**—*broke from cover and tried to drag the wounded operator to safety.* *She grabbed his plate carrier and pulled, trying to get him behind the ballistic shield, trying to get him out of the line of fire.* *Kira heard the commotion. Heard the screaming. Heard the chaos.* **She bit her lip hard enough to taste blood, held her breath, and leaned around the corner.** *The HRT operators laid down immediate suppressive fire. Rounds hammered into the concrete wall she was using for cover, chipping away chunks, filling the air with dust and pulverized stone. Death missing her face by inches.* **She didn't care.** *Her red dot settled on the wounded operator. On his face, twisted with pain and fear. On the blonde woman trying to drag him to safety.* *Kira squeezed the trigger.* *The round caught him in the mouth. Entered through his open screaming lips and exited through the back of his skull, taking brain matter and bone fragments with it. His body went instantly limp.* **Dead before he even registered the impact.** *The blonde woman:* **Maya,** *though Kira didn't know her name, dropped him reflexively, from the shock of watching her teammate's head explode. She stumbled backward, nearly fell, scrambled for cover behind the ballistic shield..* *Kira ducked back behind cover.* **She was laughing. And crying. Both at the same time.** *Tears streamed down her face, cutting tracks through the grime and blood. Her body shook with hysterical, half-mad laughter that came from some deep place of trauma and rage.* **She'd killed one of them.** *One of the HRT operators who'd been systematically destroying her team. One small victory.* **But it didn't feel like victory. It felt hollow. Empty.** *But eight of her teammates were gone. Eight people she'd trained with, fought beside, shared rations with.* **David, Lin, Berlin, Fresh, Blake, Omar, Sarah's team that she'd lost track of.** *Eight good people—well, maybe not good, but her people, dead in a foreign city for a cause that was probably bullshit anyway.* **And the FBI was still coming.** **"MOVING!"** *An American voice.* **"FLANKING THROUGH THIS THEATHER."** **"NOVAK NO!"** *Kira's head snapped up. Theater Eleven was adjacent to this one. If they flanked through there, they'd come out behind her position. She'd be caught in crossfire with nowhere to go.* *She risked a peek around the corner again.* *Saw the blonde operator, the one she'd just killed the partner of, disappearing into Theater Eleven's entrance. Moving fast..* **A flanker. Coming around to hit her from the side.** *If that operator succeeded,* **Kira was dead.** *If she stayed here,* **she was dead.** *Her only chance was to intercept the flanker before they got into position.* "Sarah!" *Kira keyed her radio.* "Flanker in Theater Eleven! I'm going after them! Stay where you are, I'll be right back!" "KIRA!" *Sarah's voice was sharp with alarm.* "Don't—" *She was already gone.* --- **She sprinted across Theater 12's interior, SR-16 up and ready.** *The theater was a disaster. One of the drone strikes had punched a massive hole through the roof, letting in the first traces of dawn light.* **Bodies lay scattered among the seats,** *civilians who'd been in the theater when the attack started, who'd died from gas or bullets or explosions.* **The movie screen was still somehow playing,** *an action film blasting at full volume, gunshots and explosions from the audio track mixing with the real gunshots and explosions echoing through the building.* *The movie played on, indifferent to the carnage. On screen, some action hero was firing a machine gun from a helicopter.* **The irony was not lost on Kira.** *She moved up the staircase that ran along the theater's side wall, her SR-16 aimed directly at the far entrance, the one the HRT operator would have to come through if she was flanking the standard way. Kira's breathing was controlled despite the adrenaline, her eyes scanning, her ears swiveling to catch any sound beneath the movie's audio.* **The math was simple:** *the HRT operator couldn't have made it this far already. Not if she'd entered from the main hallway. Which meant Kira could intercept her.* **Ambush her.** *Kill her before she became a threat to the rest of the team.* *Kira's eyes found the projection booth halfway up the theater's rear wall. Small, elevated, with a clear view of both entrances. Perfect overwatch position. She could fort up there, cover the door, wait for the target to enter, and drop her the moment she showed.* *Still keeping her rifle trained on the far entrance, Kira moved toward the projection booth. Her back was to the booth's interior as she approached, all her attention focused on the potential threat from the theater entrance.* *She pushed through the booth's door, still holding her angle.* *Then she heard it:* **crunch.** *The sound of boot on broken glass.* **Behind her.** **Inside the booth.** *Kira's blood turned to ice. She spun, her rifle coming around—* *The blonde HRT operator was already there. Already inside. Already had her rifle raised and aimed directly at Kira's center mass.* *It was the same woman from the hallway. The one who'd tried to save her wounded teammate. The one Kira had just watched kill two of her friends earlier in the arena.* *Maya fucking Novak.* *For maybe half a second, they stared at each other. Two enemies. Close enough to see each other's eyes clearly in the dim light from the movie screen.* **Kira saw rage there. And grief. And cold, determination.** *She decided to turn her rifle toward Maya rather than try to retreat.* **Fuck it. If she was going to die, she'd do it fighting.** *Both operators squeezed their triggers simultaneously.* **Click. Click.** *Wow! Both weapons jammed! How* **lucky!** *Maya's clearing malfunction, failure to fire, probably a primer issue. Kira's rifle had a stovepipe, brass caught in the ejection port.* *The distance between them was maybe eight feet. Too close to effectively clear the malfunctions before the other could close. Too close to run. Too close for anything except* **violence.** *Maya's training kicked in automatically. Her hands moved to her rifle's charging handle, beginning the immediate action drill to clear the malfunction. **Tap, rack, bang.** *Muscle memory taking over.* *But Kira's animal instincts were **faster.** **She dropped her rifle, let it fall on its sling, and *pounced.** *The wolf demi-human crossed the eight-foot gap in a single explosive movement, her enhanced strength and animal reflexes giving her a split-second advantage.* *She hit Maya like a* **freight train,** *driving her backward into the projection equipment. Her right fist came around in a vicious hook that caught Maya in the side of the helmet, the impact sending shock waves through Kira's knuckles.* *Maya's rifle clattered away as she tried to absorb the impact. Her hands came up defensively—* *Kira's knife was already in her hand. The small blade she kept in a chest rig pouch, barely four inches long but razor sharp. She'd cleared it from the sheath during her attack.* *Maya managed to get her rifle unstuck and brought it up, finger finding the trigger—* **CRACK!** *The shot went wide—fired in panic, from the hip, no aimed sight picture, but it caught Kira in the left arm. The round punched through the soft tissue just below her shoulder, missing bone and major arteries by* **millimeters** *but tearing through muscle with devastating effect.* *Pain exploded up Kira's arm like someone had shoved a hot rod through it. Blood immediately began soaking her sleeve, running down to her elbow.* **She didn't give one flying fuck.** "GET THE FUCK OFF ME!" *Maya screamed, trying to bring her rifle around for another shot, trying to create space—* *They crashed to the ground together, thrashing, fighting for control of the blade. Maya's hand closed around Kira's wrist, stopping the knife from coming down again.* *Kira's other hand grabbed Maya's throat, squeezing, her fangs bared inches from Maya's face.** "I'm going to make you **feel** exactly what my friends felt when you shot them," *Kira growled, her voice barely human. Blood from her arm wound dripped onto Maya's face.* "I'm going to watch you die slow—" *Maya smiled. Actually fucking smiled, blood on her teeth from the knife wounds.* "This about revenge?" *she said, her voice strained but defiant.* "You want revenge? That's **rich** coming from the terrorist who just killed thousands of civilians. You want to know about revenge, bitch?" *She bucked her hips, trying to throw Kira off, but Kira's weight kept her pinned.* "My best friend died because of you fuckers," *Maya continued, that smile turning into something darker.* "Xavier Kowalski. Twenty-nine years old. Loved bad movies and terrible coffee and had a kid on the way. Your people killed him. So yeah. This is about revenge. You want to kill me? **Go ahead and fucking try."** *They thrashed across the projection booth floor, both fighting for the knife, neither willing to give ground. Kira managed to wrench her hand free from Maya's grip. The blade came down.* **Once in Maya's side. Deep.** **Twice, same location. Deeper.** *Maya screamed—pain and rage mixing into pure animal sound. Her hand came up, not trying to stop the knife now but swinging her fist in a desperate strike.* *Then, Maya* **headbutted** *Kira with the full force of her ballistic helmet. The crown of the helmet caught Kira directly in the face.* *Stars exploded across Kira's vision. Pain erupted from her nose and cheekbone. She tumbled backward off Maya, landing hard on her ass, the knife flying from her hand and skittering across the floor into the shadows.* "FUCK—" *Kira's hand came up to her face, felt blood pouring from her nose. Her vision swam.* **Concussion probably. Definitely concussion.** *Maya staggered to her feet, her hands pressed against the stab wounds in her side, blood seeping between her fingers. She stumbled forward, falling on top of Kira before the wolf demi-human could recover.* **Maya's hands found Kira's throat.** **And squeezed.** "This is my revenge," *Maya growled, her face inches from Kira's, blood dripping from her mouth onto Kira's face. "For Davis. For Kowalski. For every person you killed tonight. How's it feel, terrorist? How's it feel to **DIE?"** *Kira's hands came up, trying to pry Maya's fingers from her throat, but the human had position and leverage. And despite the stab wounds, despite the blood loss, Maya was strong..* **Refusing to let go.** *Kira couldn't breathe. Her wolf ears pressed flat against her head. Her vision was starting to darken at the edges, black spots swimming in front of her eyes. Her lungs burned. Her body screamed for air that wouldn't come.* *She was going to die here. On the floor of a movie theater projection booth. Strangled by an FBI operator whose name she didn't even know.* *After everything. After six years of operations. After surviving Syria and Libya and Eastern Europe and three hours of hell in Washington D.C.* **She was going to die to this blonde bitch's hands around her throat.** *"F-fuck..",she thought to herself.*
