**0458 Hours - Three Hours After Initial Attack**
---
*The ammunition bags had been a lifesaver*. **literally.** *Each operator had started with maybe 120 rounds of rifle ammunition. Now, three hours into what was supposed to be a quick raid-and-hold operation, Kira had burned through nearly 400 rounds. The heavy duffel bags they'd staged in defensive positions throughout the arena held thousands of rounds total, multiple calibers, stripper clips for fast reloading, spare magazines, grenades.*
*Without them, they'd have been Winchester an hour ago.*
**Instead, they were just regular fucked.**
**The problem wasn't ammunition. The problem was that the entire federal government was trying to kill them.**
*Kira had known American response would be heavy. She'd expected police, SWAT, maybe some federal agents. What she hadn't expected was* **everyone**. *Every agency, every jurisdiction, every armed force within a hundred miles had descended on the Capital One Arena like the wrath of God.*
**Local D.C. Metro Police SWAT** *had arrived first, however they were brave, outgunned, and mostly dead now. Then came the* **U.S. Marshals Service**, *aggressive as hell, pushing hard despite taking casualties.* **FBI Enhanced SWAT** *teams from the Washington Field Office..* **Secret Service Counter Assault Teams who should have been protecting the President but were here instead, probably because the President was missing and they had nothing left to protect.*
*And then came* **HRT.**
**FBI Hostage Rescue Team.** *The absolute best tactical operators the Bureau had. Tier-one capability, unlimited budgets, operators who'd cut their teeth on counterterrorism and knew urban warfare like Kira knew fear. They'd shown up about an hour ago and immediately started pushing the S.C. forces back with methodical, professional violence.*
*The HRT operators fought differently than the others. More disciplined. More patient. They used ballistic shields, coordinated fire and movement, proper room clearing procedures. They didn't rush in like the Marshals or SWAT, instead they advanced with inexorable pressure, grinding down defensive positions through superior tactics and firepower.*
**And they were fucking good at it.**
*Kira was pressed against a concrete wall in what had been the arena's main concourse, her chest heaving with exertion and fear, her ears ringing from sustained gunfire in enclosed spaces. The* **SR-16** *felt hot in her hands, she'd been shooting almost continuously for the last twenty minutes, burning through magazines faster than she could reload.*
*The concourse had become a killbox. Bodies littered the floor with American responders, civilian casualties caught in crossfire. Spent brass covered the ground like confetti. Blood pooled in low spots. Smoke and chemical haze reduced visibility to maybe thirty meters.*
**And the Americans kept pushing.**
**"CONTACT FRONT!"** *Marcus roared from somewhere to Kira's right. His heavy PKM machine gun opened up with its distinctive hammering report, spitting 7.62x54mmR rounds downrange in sustained bursts that forced the advancing Americans to take cover.*
*Kira popped around her corner, rifle shouldered, red dot finding targets. Federal agents, looked like* **Marshals** *from their gear, were advancing in bounds, using the arena's structural columns for cover. She squeezed off three-round bursts, suppressive fire more than aimed shots, trying to slow their advance.*
*One Marshal moved too eagerly, he broke from cover to advance to the next column before his teammates could provide covering fire. Kira's red dot settled on him for maybe half a second. She pressed the trigger.* **Three rounds.**
*The first caught him in the upper chest, above his plate carrier. The second hit his throat. The third punched through his face shield and took the top of his skull off.*
*He dropped like someone had cut his strings, just collapsed in a heap, dead before he hit the ground. His rifle clattered away across the blood-slick floor.*
*Kira ducked back behind cover as return fire stitched the wall where her head had been, concrete chips exploding, dust filling the air. Her chest ached from the rounds she'd taken earlier.. Definitely cracked ribs, maybe worse. Every breath hurt. Every movement sent pain lancing through her torso.*
*But she was alive. Which was more than could be said for half her team.*
*She risked a glance left, checking on Chen and Nadia who'd been holding the adjacent corner maybe twenty meters away. Both operators were pressed behind a thick concrete support pillar, trading fire with American forces advancing from a perpendicular corridor.*
**But they weren't watching their flank.**
The corridor to their left, the one that connected to the service passages, was a blind spot in their position. Kira could see it from her angle but they couldn't. And nobody was covering it.*
"BERLIN! FRESH!" *Kira screamed over the gunfire, her voice cracking with strain.* **"WATCH YOUR LEFT! CORRIDOR ON YOUR LEFT!"**
*The two operators didn't react. Between the sustained gunfire, the explosions still echoing through the building, and their own focused fire on the threat to their front, they couldn't hear her.*
"FUCK!" *Kira tried again, louder:* **"YOUR LEFT FLANK! WATCH YOUR FUCKING LEFT!"**
**Nothing.**
*Kira wanted to move, wanted to sprint over there and physically grab them, force them to watch that corridor, but she was pinned. If she left her cover, the Marshals to her front would shred her. She couldn't help them and hold her own position.*
*She turned back to her own fight, popping around the corner to lay down more suppressive fire. Her magazine ran dry. She dropped it, slammed a fresh one home from her chest rig, charged the bolt, kept shooting.*
*She didn't see the HRT team enter the service corridor. Didn't know they were there until it was too late.*
---
(a little view from Maya from "Hostage Rescue Team")
**Maya fucking Novak** *moved through the service corridor with her rifle up, every sense hyper-alert, her brother's dog tags pressing against her chest beneath her plate carrier. The Capital One Arena had become a charnel house:* **thousands of civilian dead from chemical weapons, dozens of law enforcement casualties, ongoing firefight in the main concourse that sounded like a small war.**
*And somewhere in this nightmare, the people who'd done this were still fighting.*
*Gold Team had been deployed twenty minutes ago, attached to a larger federal response element that included Marshals, ATF, and what looked like half of D.C.'s remaining SWAT operators.* **Their mission was simple: find and eliminate the hostiles holding the arena.**
*The intel suggested maybe a dozen S.C. operators left, dug into defensive positions throughout the building. They'd taken heavy casualties from the initial response but the survivors were experienced, well-armed, and fighting with the desperation of people who knew they weren't getting out alive.*
"Hold," *Okonkwo whispered into the radio, his hand raised in a fist. The stack behind him froze in place.*
*They were approaching an intersection in the service corridor that should put them behind one of the S.C. defensive positions. Intel suggested two or three hostiles holding that corner, focused on the federal forces pushing from the main concourse.(
**Which meant their flank was exposed.**
*Devon moved the shield forward, hugging the wall as they approached the corner. The heavy ballistic protection would give them critical seconds of advantage when they made contact. Behind the shield, Okonkwo and Sofia had their rifles up and ready.*
*Maya could hear the gunfire now. Close, maybe twenty meters ahead. The distinctive crack of suppressed rifles mixing with unsuppressed weapons..*
*They reached the corner. Devon positioned the shield at the junction point. Okonkwo peered around carefully, using the shield's edge for cover.*
*He held up two fingers. Two targets. Both focused away from Gold Team's position,* **completely unaware.**
*Okonkwo's hand made the signal:8 Wait. Wait for them to expose themselves. Wait for the perfect shot.
*Maya's finger rested on her trigger guard, ready to move to the trigger the instant the order came. Her breathing was controlled despite the adrenaline flooding her system.* **This was what she trained for. What HRT existed to do.**
*The two S.C. operators leaned out from behind their pillar, firing sustained bursts toward the federal forces on the main concourse. Their sides were completely exposed for maybe two seconds.*
**That was all Gold Team needed.**
"NOW!" *Okonkwo's command and his gunfire came simultaneously.*
*The four operators behind the shield opened up in perfect synchronization. Suppressed weapons cracked in a sustained roar. Forty, fifty, sixty rounds in three seconds. Both S.C. operators went down under the overwhelming fire.*
**But HRT didn't stop shooting.**
*The bodies jerked and twitched as more rounds punched through them—through their armor, through their bodies, hitting the concrete beyond with sparks and chips of pulverized stone. it was to make absolutely sure the threats were* **neutralized.**
*One of the rounds meant for the S.C. operators struck the concrete wall just beyond them. The ricochet screamed past where a third hostile, previously unseen from this angle, had her face pressed against the wall.*
*Maya saw the muzzle flash from that position. Saw the female S.C. operator—wolf demi-human, young, terrified, screaming something as another operator grabbed her and dragged her back.*
**"MOVING!"** *Devon surged forward with the shield, advancing aggressively now that the immediate threats were down. Gold Team flowed behind him, weapons tracking, scanning for additional targets.*
*The female operator was still visible, being dragged backward by someone—looked like a bear demi-human, massive, probably team leader. She was screaming, fighting against the grip, trying to get back to her fallen teammates.*
**"CONTACT REAR!"** *Andre's voice from behind Maya. More S.C. forces, trying to reinforce.* **"THEY'RE PUSHING FROM—"**
*Gunfire erupted from multiple directions. The Americans on the main concourse, realizing HRT had breached the S.C. flank, surged forward with renewed aggression. Marshals, ATF, FBI Enhanced and D.C SWAT, Secret Service CAT, everyone pushing simultaneously.*
**The S.C. position collapsed.**
*Maya saw the bear demi-human, which **had to be their commander**, *trying to organize a fighting withdrawal. He was shouting orders, directing his remaining operators to fall back toward the skybridge that connected the arena to Gallery Place shopping mall.*
**He never finished the sentence.**
*Multiple weapons opened fire simultaneously. The bear went down hard, a round through his throat, then more rounds stitching across his torso as the federal forces poured fire into him with overwhelming volume. His body jerked under the impacts, blood spraying, armor failing under sustained fire.*
*The female wolf operator screamed. Not words. Just a raw sound of rage and grief.*
"MOVING!" *someone shouted—one of the surviving S.C. operators.* **"FALL BACK TO THE MALL! MOVE MOVE MOVE!"**
*They were running now, a disorganized retreat toward the skybridge. Maya counted maybe six or seven left from what had probably been a twelve-person team. The rest dead or too wounded to move.*
*One S.C operator, human, looked like he was in his thirties, positioned himself at the skybridge entrance. Covering position.* **Buying time for his teammates to escape.**
"CONTACT! HOLDOVER POSITION!" *Okonkwo called out, identifying the threat.*
*The S.C. operator opened fire, his AK platform dumping rounds on full auto, forcing the federal teams to take cover, slowing their advance by precious seconds.*
*The female wolf operator made it across the skybridge into the mall. Maya saw her turn, saw her try to go back—*
**"NO!"** *The covering operator shouted, his voice carrying over the gunfire.* **"GO! GET THE FUCK OUT OF—"**
*He turned to look at the wolf demi-human, made eye contact across the distance. Maybe forty meters separated them but Maya could see his face clearly in the emergency lighting.*
**BRRTTTTTTTTT!!*
*Then he disappeared under a storm of gunfire. Marshals, HRT, SWAT, DSS, SS, ATF—everyone shooting simultaneously. The covering operator's body literally came apart under the volume of fire, rounds punching through him from multiple angles, his blood* **painting the walls.**
---
**Kira's voice caught in her throat.**
*She'd watched four teammates die in less than five minutes.* **Rio and Fresh,** shredded by HRT fire while she screamed warnings they couldn't hear. **Blake,** *their commander, throat shot and then dumped with bullets as the federal forces pushed forward with overwhelming aggression.* **Omar,** *holding the skybridge so they could escape, looking back at her one last time before disappearing under gunfire so intense his body literally disintegrated.*
**"MOVE!"** *Sarah grabbed Kira's plate carrier and physically shoved her deeper into Gallery Place. The second-in-command had assumed operational control after Blake's death.* "Keep moving! Don't fucking stop!"
*Kira's legs moved automatically but her mind was stuck on that last image. Omar looking at her. The moment of connection. Then the gunfire.*
"KIRA!" *Sarah shoved her again, harder.* "SNAP THE FUCK OUT OF IT! That could have been you! That should have been you if Omar hadn't held them! Don't waste his sacrifice by freezing up!"
*They were in the shopping mall now,* **Gallery Place,** *a three-story retail complex connected to the arena by the skybridge they'd just crossed. In normal times it would be closed at 5 AM. Now it was dark, empty, filled with the same chemical haze that permeated the arena.*
*And filled with the sounds of pursuit.*
**Behind them, multiple federal teams were advancing. The Americans weren't stopping. They'd broken the S.C. defensive position at the arena and now they were hunting the survivors with systematic aggression.**
*Kira could hear tactical commands being shouted:* **"Federal agents! Throw out your weapons and show your hands!" "FBI! Come out now!" "We have you surrounded!"**
*No they fucking didn't.* **Not yet.** *But they would* **soon.**
"How many?" *Marcus gasped, his voice strained. The elk demi-human was bleeding from multiple wounds—looked like he'd taken shrapnel from a grenade at some point.* "How many of us left?"
*Sarah did a quick count as they moved through the darkened mall, past shuttered stores and empty kiosks.* "Six. We're down to six."
**Half the team. Gone in three hours.**
*Kira felt rage boiling up from somewhere deep in her chest, mixing with the fear and exhaustion and pain from her cracked ribs. *Her hands tightened on her SR-16 until her knuckles went white. Her ears pressed flat against her head, her lips pulling back from her fangs.*
"We need to kill them," *she heard herself saying, her voice low and dangerous.* "The ones who did this. The ones who killed them. We need to—"
"We need to survive," *Sarah cut her off sharply.* "That's what we need to do. Find a position, fortify it, hold out until extraction."
**"There IS NO EXTRACTION!"** *Kira's voice cracked.* "They're not coming for us! We're buying time for the main operation and then we're expendable! WE WERE ALWAYS **EXPENDABLE."**
"Maybe," *Sarah acknowledged grimly.* "But I'm not dying in a fucking shopping mall. We find a position, we hold it, we make them pay for every meter. And if extraction comes, great. If it doesn't, we take as many of these American bastards with us as we can. Sound good?"
**It didn't sound good. It sounded like a suicide mission that had already gone wrong.**
*But Kira nodded anyway, because what fucking else was she going to do?*
*Behind them, the sound of pursuit intensified. Boots on tile. Tactical commands. The Americans were in the mall now, spreading out, establishing perimeter, beginning their systematic clearance.*
"There!" *David pointed toward an anchor store at the far end of the mall.* "Macy's. Multiple floors, lots of positions, limited approaches. We can fort up there."
"Move," *Sarah ordered.* "Fast and quiet. They know we're in here but they don't know where yet. Let's keep it that way as long as possible."
*The six surviving operators: **Sarah, Marcus, David, Ash, Lin, and Kira,** *moved through the darkened shopping mall, weapons up, scanning for threats, knowing that the entire federal government was hunting them and that survival was measured in minutes, maybe hours at most.*
*Kira's rifle felt heavy in her hands. Her chest ached with every breath. Her ears twitched at every sound.*
*And in her mind, on repeat, she kept seeing Omar's face as he turned to look at her one last time before the gunfire took him.*
**"Fuck this shit..."**
