League of Legends is one of the most popular video games in the world with over 100 million monthly active players and the biggest eSports scene across the globe with over 100 million viewers. However, the game can be difficult to master for newcomers because of its complexity in terms of gameplay and mechanics, roles, meta, and individual champions.

Before the millions of players and billions in revenue, the esports tournaments that draw over 100 million viewers—before all of it, League of Legends was just an idea, a concept with no code and only a design document to its name. But the game that launched on Oct. 27, 2009, didn’t happen by accident. It was the result of a decade-long journey punctuated by terror and wild leaps of faith, powered by an army of interns and a whole lot of luck.

Jew and his small team often dreaded the months between when they announced the project (which was originally called Onslaught) and opening the door to the public, which happened in April 2009. It wasn’t because the work was difficult—it was because their ideals were at odds with each other. They wanted to deliver what they envisioned as a DOTA clone quickly, but also aspired to innovate and improve on the genre. Those two goals clashed, and eventually the core team broke apart.롤대리
