Pebbles are formed when the preexisting rocks are naturally eroded to the surface of the earth and fall to Earth's surface, eventually coming to rest on the Earth's surface. Pebbles typically consist of pieces of metamorphic, igneous or sedimentary rock that have been eroded over time through exposure to atmosphere and water and glaciers. as the process is complete, they are smaller than grains (2 to 4 millimeters in diameter) but larger than cobbles (6-to 64 millimeter diameter).

Pebble shapes and sizes vary dramatically based upon the geological setting and the process of rock formation, yet can be everywhere in the globe. They are typically associated with beaches that are sandy and river beds. Pebbles play a crucial role in mitigating coastal erosion while providing habitats to plants and animals alike.

If you are collecting pebbles, make sure to bring an extra bag, pencil or pen, paper and notepad to record each pebble along with handheld lenses and possibly even the hammers and chisels (for more advanced collectors). Before you embark on your adventure make sure you check local laws to determine if they are legal before removing them from beaches.
