There are psychological reasons to gamble

Gambling is regarded as the second oldest profession that is known to man. In addition to the primal urges that drove the Apes through their evolutionary routine, an instinctive need to try new things and stand as a winner over their peers was the one quality that cut down the herd mentality and made Homo sapiens the leading species in the battle of survival. This attraction to the unknown as well as things that were beyond our control set the foundation for science, religion and mythology as well as the knowledge that would become the hallmark of the human race. After all weren't Adam and Eve gambling with destiny and the order of Lord in taking the bite of the forbidden fruit? Behold! How their bet has paid off...

The desire to play a game of luck is something that is deeply embedded into our brains. business ideas behind it are attributed to our ancestors, right up there in pre-historic era which was always in battle with one or the other. These odds were crucial to their survival, as well as that of their people. Today, we are in the 21st century. The gambling industry today is multi-billion dollars. It is thriving on the excitement and fervor of gamblers today who are "nearly" winning the jackpot. It is the desire of a smart businessman or executive with fancy degrees that drives them to gamble. The evidence of their ability to think and reason has guided them through their lives. Spending money they have earned one night in a shady casino makes for an interesting study that sheds light on the motivations and desires of a mind that lives in the midst of.

In the first place, we must recognize that all gamblers do not fit into stereotypes that people who aren't gamblers have of them. We are referring both to stereotypes on the opposite side of the spectrum. One is of a suave elegant, classy, women's man who is a shrewd drinker, who can appreciate wine and has three aces in his sleeves This image is reinforced through James Bond like characters that make gambling look glamorous and sexy up. Another side is the ugly side of the handsome devil. He's a social rot, hungover, on drugs, taking, fighting to win money. He is now a threat to his family and society because he has become so dependent on it. The real-life gambler is somewhere at the middle of the spectrum.

The gambling world can be classified into three major classes, each with their particular set of motives and reasons. These are:

1.) Casual Gamblers or low risk gamblers:

It is a class of people who view gambling for what it is, a game. They are the ones who bet their friends who are fervent over the Euro Cup outcome. They see gambling as one of the skills they have to demonstrate they are people of the world. Gambling is something they do because it's what their group of friends demands or because they enjoy the thrill of it. The most important thing though is that they always have fun with the excess they have and are aware of where to draw the line as to when to get up and go to live a normal life.

2.) 2) Habitual Gamblers or Problem Gamblers:

This is a group of people for whom gambling has transformed from a simple time pass activity to serious business. They are having a difficult time stopping the gambling habit because they are addicted to it. This is the reason why they are classified as problem gamblers because they are a regular gambler. Gambling as a way of life is certainly a problem for any individual unless he is in a perpetual winning streak.

3) Pathological Gamblers

This class will likely include people who contribute to the second type of stereotype. The term "pathological" is used in psychological usage as a compulsion marked by the ability to resist overwhelming and unreasonable desires. Gamblers who suffer from pathological addictions are irrationally drawn to gambling but have lost the ability to discern when it's the right time to end their gambling. Similar to a drug addict gambling becomes the mainstay of their lives and overrules any ethical, moral, economic or social argument against it. This is called Co-morbidity. The people who fall in this category require strong support to overcome this pit.

This is the definition of gamblers along with the reasons behind what they do. Let's now see how these individuals progress through each stage. What actually initiates an individual into the world of gambling? Our ancestors knew that taking risks was a massive risk they couldn't afford to take. Given our current situation it's obvious that trekking into the dark forest to hunt down the wild animals was a risky bet. It was their lifestyle. Gradually, but surely, the ability to take risks has diminished for all of us. For those who are just beginning, the risks of gambling are such a small amount and the reward is such that it makes sheer common sense to continue. When you add the glamour and the high lifestyle associated with the profession it becomes a Herculean job to avoid the temptation. These games are typically designed with such a structure that the gambler thinks that his skill is improving and he is closer then ever to winning. This, if not checked will eventually turn into an habit, and eventually it becomes an addiction. Gambling is essentially a combination of two universal feelings that are: the desire to win big without actually working to win it, and difficulty in giving up on the dream, no matter the level at which they're.
