Erectile dysfunction (ED)

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. It is a common problem, affecting as many as 30 million men in the United States. ED can be caused by physical or emotional problems, or a combination of both.

Physical causes of ED include: heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, low testosterone levels, and chronic alcoholism. Emotional causes of ED include: stress, anxiety, depression, and relationship problems.

If you are experiencing symptoms of erectile dysfunction it is important to see your doctor right away for diagnosis and treatment. Treatment options for ED include lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking or losing weight; medications such as phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (such as sildenafil citrate – Viagra), penile injections or suppositories; vacuum devices that create a vacuum around the penis to help maintain an erection; surgery to implant a device that helps produce an erection; and counseling if psychological factors are contributing to the problem.
