IPhone Minecraft Client Posted, Pulled

If you keep an watch on the App Store (or have an RSS feed following it), you might have seen an app dubbed Minecrafted up there on a Monday morning. It's an Minecraft client for iOS and is a new version of the hugely popular indie game that can be played on an iPhone and also connect to real Minecraft servers. But before you download it, not so quickly -- the app has been pulled from the App Store already and if you attempt to download it from the US store, you'll see an error message.

What's the problem? TUAW reached out to Trevor Wilkin, the app's creator. He explained that his original plan was for the app to be created, submitted to Apple and then ratified by Minecraft before it went live. Apple released it immediately, however Wilkin states that he was "pretty very scared and removed the app as quickly as I could." He's not sure if his app is legitimate since it's completely original code according to the description. But, it's likely that he reverse engineered some things since it's compatible with the current servers or versions of the game.

To us, Wilkin sounds innocent enough. He says that Wilkin has "no desire to hurt the brand and only wanted to launch an effective tool. I'm still hoping to work out an official solution that doesn't put a foot on anyone's toes." We'd like to think so, too -- having Minecraft running in a legal manner on iOS is a welcome benefit for iPhone users and fans of the game that is so popular.
