Blizzard has initiated legal proceedings against World of Warcraft's biggest and, arguably, best private server, Nostalrius. Nostalrius is an emulation of Blizz's Vanilla WoW server (in PvP and PvE varieties)-it mimics the original World of Warcraft (opens in new tab) as close as is possible The main difference is its capacity to accommodate approximately 11,000 concurrent players. It is a phenomenal achievement that will shut down starting on April 10.

"Yesterday, we received a notice of formal notice from US and french lawyers, on behalf of Blizzard Entertainment, who are preparing to appear in court against our hosting company OVH and ourselves within less than a week now," the dev team sends (opens in new tab). "This is the definitive end of Nostalrius under its current form."

Nostalrius is a time capsule. It's a beautiful nostalgic record of the past. It's a piece of art that was created by passionate fans who have no official counterpart. However, the Nostalrius creators aren't going to give up.

"We will still be publicly offering everything you need to create your own Nostalrius If you're willing to," the post continues. "Today is also the day when Nostalrius will begin to be a community-driven application in the fullest sense and we will be releasing the source code and anonymized player data (encrypting personal account data) as well as the community as a whole will decide on the future of Nostalrius. We will be there in the background if you would like us to, but we will not be the primary decision-maker."

They are also petitioning Blizzard (opens in new tab) for the server's survival. There are currently more than 20,000 signatures as of the time of writing. However, unless there is some miracle, Nostalrius will vanish at 23:00 CET+1 , April 10.
