Junkyard cars provide a wealth of cheap auto parts if you want to take the time to look. And you can get more stuff for the bucks you spend. Getting your cool auto into tip top shape is the real goal.

If the junk vehicle in your yard is obviously not a classic car but is in decent cosmetic condition, the first thing you should do is see if you can get the car started. In most cases the engine has seized up which could mean it will cost you a lot of money to get it fixed. Contact a mechanic or somebody who knows a lot about cars to see if they can diagnose what is wrong with the vehicle. In most cases they will tell you it needs a new engine and perhaps a new transmission. The cost of buying these parts and installing them will probably far exceed the value of the vehicle. In fact, you might even be able to buy the same vehicle in working condition for far less than it would take you to fix the junk car in your yard. Not to mention that would be far less headache.

Rust is iron oxide. The oxidation of iron is a chemical reaction requiring moisture and oxygen. The three types of iron oxide are black powder, expressed as FeO, reddish-brown powder, expressed as Fe2O3 and a hybrid of the first two, expressed as Fe3O4. Without moisture, rust is impossible. If you could seal an iron nail in a jar of pure oxygen, with no water present, the nail would not rust. If you put water in the jar, the nail would rust quite soon. Throw salt into the experiment and the "rust monsters" will soon eat up your nail.



Many of the newer vehicles produced today are made from recycled steel that comes from used cars. It is far easier, and environmentally friendly, to use steel already made than produce it brand new.

But after a certain time frame the actual manufacturers of these parts are allowed to sell them to other wholesale distributors for resale. This time they come with the manufacturer's logo and not that of the car maker. So essentially, the identical part is now referred to as an OEM part.

Be careful when buying auto parts from chain auto parts stores. The problem here is that quite often they will overcharge which means that you really must be making your decisions for your car parts as an informed decision. Meaning you need to do your research before you buy.
