Rank Group's losses raise warning for online Togel gambling
Rank Group has injected a note of caution into the story of the rampant growth of the online gambling industry, by today announcing a loss for its online activities.
The company, which bought online bookie Blue Square in January for £65m, said its Interactive Gaming division made a £5m loss in 2002, its first full year of operations, on turnover of £2.4m.
Rank blamed the losses on investment in building up market share and the start-up costs of HardRockCasino.com which was launched in July. As well as that, Rank Interactive Gaming includes the Rank.com site. Between them they had 75,000 registered customers at the end of December and annualised betting running at around £90m.
Several other gambling firms have also released results this week, showing strong growth in their operations.
In its 2002 results Ladbrokes increased its online profits from £2m to £11.2m, helped by growth on its two core sites, ladbrokes.com and ladbrokescasino.com as well as the launch of ladbrokespoker.com in May. Online turnover rose from £188.2m to £390.3m.
Meanwhile online revenues at Paddy Power, which covers both Internet and iTV betting, grew 195% to Euro 102.8m (£70.4m) over the past year.
Around two-thirds of the people in Taiwan are in favor of the establishment of Togel casinos in Penghu, according to the latest opinion poll released yesterday by the Ministry of the Interior.
Minister of the Interior Yu Cheng-hsien (—]?¬Œ›) said that if holiday resorts operating casinos are required to pay a certain amount of money to benefit social security, education and the development of offshore islands, 65 percent of the poll's respondents agreed to the legalization of gambling in the Penghu archipelago, while 22 percent of them were opposed to the idea.
According to the survey, if the National Police Administration steps up its anti-crime and anti-gun efforts, then 61 percent of respondent agreed to the building of casinos while 26 percent were opposed. Respondents associated both crime and gun use with casinos.
The debate -- both within and without the government -- over whether Penghu should use gambling to boost its sagging economy has been raging for more than five years.
Yu said the top three reasons why the respondents support the casino idea are: legalized gambling could help the local government's finances, casinos create jobs and casinos would provide recreation venues.
Those who frown upon the idea of turning Penghu into a miniature Las Vegas or Atlantic City said they worry that legalized gambling might cause social problems, destroy good customs and tarnish Penghu's reputation as a desirable place for families to visit.
Some respondents also cited their lack of confidence in the government's management capability as the main reason for their opposition to legalizing and establishing casinos.
