It was 70 million years ago, during the late Cretaceous period. This was a time long before machines came into existance. A time where civilizations, bar the many tribes of humans scattered across the world, didn’t exist. The Cretaceous period was a era where the lands were nothing but plains, forests, savannahs, and deserts. Massive oceans surrounded the enormous expanses of land, housing thousands upon thousands of prehistoric creatures swimming beneath the waves. On the land, extraordinary animals and plant life thrived beautifully. The most magnificent creatures of all were the mighty dinosaurs, the ancient reptiles that roamed the Earth and claimed it as their great kingdom.
In a massive forest located in a land that would eventually become North America, a medium sized nest lay on top of a large slab of rock. The nest was bowl-shaped, fashioned out of various twigs, plants, and roots. Inside the primitive construct, a large oval-shaped egg lay still, giving out no signs of movement. All of a sudden, two massive shadows loomed over the egg, blocking out the sunlight that had cut its way through the canopy of the trees. The two shadows revealed to be a mated pair of Tyrannosaurs, looking at the egg expectantly.
“It shouldn’t be long until the egg hatches.” Said the dark blue male T-Rex in a excited tone.
“Hopefully. I can’t wait to see our baby. I hope it’s a female!” Replied the light magenta female T-Rex. The male scoffed at her statement.
“A female? Please. This valley doesn’t have enough male Rexes walking about.” The male stated, earning a look from his mate.
“...... Not that there’s anything wrong with having a lot of females.”
The female let out a soft laugh as she lovingly nuzzled her mate while keeping a close eye on the egg.
“Lora, do you think we’ll be good parents?” The male asked.
“Karo, of course we will. I know you’ll definitely be a great father.” Lora replied. The two soon-to-be parents continued to coo over their egg, until a rage-filled roar broke the peaceful silence.
The thundering sound of footsteps made the two Tyrannosaurs turn their heads to the source of the sound. A massive, greyish-green Tyrannosaurus Rex smashed his way out of the foliage, roaring angrily. His blood-red eyes set on the two smaller Tyrannosaurs, steam rising from his nostrils. His whole body, especially his face, was covered in gruesome scars, some were still fresh. His breath reeked of blood and death, expelling a nasty scent in the air. Karo and Kara snarled as they stood defensively in front of their nest.
“Dharak!” Karo exclaimed, circling the larger Tyrannosaurus. Dharak snarled viciously as he took a snap at Karo, who dodged with little effort. Karo lunged at Dharak and clamped his jaws on Dharak’s neck, sinking his sharp teeth into the Tyrannosaur’s scaly skin. Lora bit down on Dharak’s left leg, trying to bring him down. Dharak roared furiously, throwing the couple off effortlessly. He turned to the nest and charged, opening his wicked jaws to devour the egg inside. Karo rammed Dharak right on time, shoving the larger predator onto the ground. The impact of Dharak’s fall shook the ground enough to fling the egg out of the nest. The egg rolled downhill, escaping Dharak’s grasp.
“NOOOOOO!!!!” Karo screamed, running to rescue the egg. But he was stopped when Dharak clamped his jaws on Karo’s neck and lifted him into the air, throwing him into Lora. The two Tyrannosaurs helplessly slid off a cliff, plummeting straight down into a dark abyss below. Dharak roared triumphantly as he turned around and left, completely forgetting about the egg.
~~~
The egg continued rolling downhill, miraculously remaining intact. After what seemed like forever, the egg finally rolled into a large nest, leaning next to another egg. The second egg in question was a little bigger than the first one, and it sported little pink speckles on its shell. As if on cue, a soon-to-be mother Hadrosaur approached the nest, gasping in shock at the strange egg that appeared in her nest. All of a sudden, the larger egg began to tremble and shake, revealing small cracks enveloping on the shell. After a moment, a infant light pink female Hadrosaur broke out of the eggshell while squeaking loudly. The mother Hadrosaur smiled with glee as she nuzzled her newborn infant with her snout. Following suit, the first egg began to shake and tremble wildly, rolling around in the nest. A second later, a tail broke a hole in the eggshell, wagging excessively. A pair of clawed feet broke through, fumbling in the air. The egg finally stood up, wobbling profusely. As soon as it got up, the egg fell on the ground and smashed into a bunch of pieces, revealing a tiny light blue male Tyrannosaurus Rex hidden inside. The infant T-Rex sneezed and lifted his head towards the mother Hadrosaur, his light brown eyes meeting her emerald green eyes. A butterfly fluttered over the T-Rex’s snout, intriguing the infant. Upon attempting to follow the insect, the infant T-Rex fell over, breaking out into a fit of laughter. The mother Hadrosaur smiled, nuzzling the little carnivore lovingly.
“Welcome to the world, my little K’aloo....” The Hadrosaur softly crooned.
Chapter 1
Years have gone by. Over time, young K’aloo grew to a playful and curious child. He grew up on the east coast of the land, inside a bordered plateau that provided a abundance of food, water, and protection from predators. It was a beautiful place to live, yet this peaceful area doesn’t have a lot of fun activities for a growing T-Rex to do.
“Gotcha!” K’aloo exclaimed, splitting a bush in half as he jumped in, only to find nothing but a lone lizard eating a handful of berries. K’aloo groaned in frustration as he closed the bush’s opening.
“Where‘s Yuna?” K’aloo asked himself while scratching the sides of his neck with his miniscule arms. At that moment, the light pink Hadrosaur tumbled out of a reddish-orange bush and landed on the ground with a thud.
“Aww, crud! I messed up again, didn’t I?” Yuna exclaimed.
“Not really. I mean, you definitely hid longer than last time.” K’aloo replied.
Yuna turned her head several times until she was finally able to make out K’aloo’s blurry shape. She gave a soft grin as she locked her faded light blue eyes on K’aloo.
“Hide-and-seek was never my favorite game, anyway. Let’s go over to the Great lake! Mom and the herd are already there.” Yuna said.
“I don’t know. The last time we all went to the Great lake together, the herd’s leaders gave me weird looks.” K’aloo said. Yuna shook her head as she walked up to her adoptive brother.
“You just gotta ignore the elders. They’re a bunch of cranky, judgemental old farts who dislike anything that’s not their species. It’s not your fault you were born a T-Rex.” Yuna said. K’aloo sighed and nodded his head in agreement.
“Alright, we’ll go. But only for a few minutes...” K’aloo said. The two youngsters raced to the Great lake that was settled on the far left of the plateau, approaching their herd. The Hadrosaurs were busy eating the tasty, bright green grass while talking amongst one another. Maua, K’aloo and Yuna’s mother, had been anxiously searching for her two children when she spotted the duo approaching the herd, quickly making her way over to the siblings.
“Where have you two been? I thought I clearly said to come to the Great lake hours ago. I was about to go looking for you!” Maua exclaimed.
“Sorry, mom. We were just playing in the forest over there.” K’aloo replied. Maua sighed and turned to the herd, escorting Yuna and K’aloo to the lake. As he approached the water to drink, K’aloo turned towards the herd’s leader, who approached the T-Rex.
“Maua, why did you bring him here?” The herd leader asked. K’aloo shot a hateful glare at the male Hadrosaur in anger.
“Toka, K’aloo has every right to join the herd wherever they travel. He’s a member of our herd.” Maua answered.
“Since when did a filthy carnivore gain the right to join my herd?!” Toka snapped, giving a scornful glare at K’aloo. He whacked the little T-Rex on the snout with his tail, causing K’aloo to yelp painfully.
“TOKA!” Maua shouted angrily, stomping the ground while getting into the Hadrosaur’s face.
“Your little monster doesn’t belong in the herd. He NEVER will.” Toka growled.
“That monster is my son! Don’t you EVER lay a paw on him again!!” Maua threatened. Toka shoved Maua back, snorting steam from his nostrils.
“Don’t ever talk to me in that tone again, or you and your children will be ousted out of my herd faster than a Velociraptor can catch a dragonfly!” Toka warned. He gave a hateful look to Yuna and K’aloo.
“I don’t want that disgusting carnivore or your useless daughter interacting with any of the younglings. They’re tainting the children with their weakness.” Toka said, earning a disgusted scoff from Maua.
“Oh, now you’re insulting my daughter, too?!” Maua exclaimed.
“Of course I am. Your blind daughter is a blemish to my herd! Look at her, she can’t see where she’s going. She has no purpose other than to be someone else’s footstool! She’s a pathetic waste of breath! Clearly, you’ve been cursed with a weak bloodline.” Toka hissed. K’aloo had just enough with the insults.
“DON’T TALK ABOUT MY SISTER THAT WAY!!!!” K’aloo screamed, sinking his sharp teeth in the arrogant leader’s hind leg. Toka screamed painfully as he began kicking wildly while trying to throw K’aloo off. The little T-Rex lost his grip and sailed into the water, jumping out right as he recovered from the fall.
“I’LL KILL YOU!!!” Toka roared, rearing up on his hind legs and lifting his forelimbs to crush K’aloo underfoot. Maua rammed Toka in his side, shoving him into the water.
“I HAD ENOUGH OF YOU, TOKA! YOU’VE DONE NOTHING BUT CRITICIZE, INSULT, AND THREATEN MY CHILDREN EVER SINCE THEY HATCHED! I’M DONE WITH YOU AND YOUR SELF-CENTERED PREFERENCES! I’M OUT OF THIS HERD!” Maua screamed, kicking Toka in the face with her hind leg as she turned to leave.
“Come on, kids. Let’s go.” Maua said, walking away from the lake with K’aloo and Yuna.
“Maua, you get back here!! MAUA!!!” Toka screamed, but his command fell on deaf ears.
As K’aloo and his family walked through the forest, the little T-Rex looked at his mother with a slightly anxious expression.
“Mom, are you.... mad at me?” K’aloo asked.
“Mad? Why would I be mad at you, sweetie?” Maua replied.
“We had to leave the herd because I bit Toka...” K’aloo said.
“K’aloo, you did the right thing by standing up for your sister. Toka is nothing but a big fat egghead that wastes his time looking at himself in the water’s reflection.” Maua said, earning a wholehearted laugh from Yuna and K’aloo. Maua wrapped her arms around the two children in a big hug, crooning to them in a loving tone.
“You both are the only things in the world I care about the most. I love you so much.” Maua said, smiling.
Chapter 2
The next morning, K’aloo and Yuna began exploring after moving into the deeper part of the forest. The two siblings jumped around and tackled each other playfully while running through trees and bushes. Rolling out of the foliage, K’aloo and Yuna tumbled onto brown, sandy soil. The two youngsters got up, taking a look at the new surroundings.
“What is this place?” Yuna asked, squinting her eyes in a attempt to make out all the blurry shapes and colors in front of her.
“Yuna, we’re in the grasslands. Mom said this place is full of dangerous stuff.” K’aloo said. He turned around, preparing to head back.
“Come on, Yuna. Mom’s not gonna like it if she found out we wandered off in here.” K’aloo said. Yuna rolled her eyes at his statement and swayed her tail in a sassy motion as she walked further into the grasslands.
“Relax, little brother. There’s no harm in taking a little look around. Come on!” Yuna said, trotting towards a nearby stream. K’aloo sighed heavily as he ran after his sister.
“Yuna, wait!” K’aloo halted, suddenly stopping when he heard rustling in the bushes. He looked around with a worried expression on his face.
“Hello? Who’s there?” K’aloo asked. Suddenly, he noticed a pair of piercing yellow eyes glaring at him from the cover of a bush. Rising from his cover, the eyes’ owner was revealed to be a male Velociraptor sporting a dark red body, black stripes, and a light beige underbelly. The raptor snarled hungrily as he approached K’aloo, drool dripping down his jaws.
“What’s a little T-Rex doing out here all alone? Aren’t ya supposed to be with mommy?” The raptor asked, circling K’aloo.
“Hey, Ragh! Look what I found!” Said a second Velociraptor, who held Yuna in his clawed hands. The second raptor sported dark blue coloring mixed with yeloow stripes and a beige underbelly.
“AGH! LET ME GO!” Yuna screamed. Despite the fact Yuna was blind, she immediately identified the two raptors thanks to her enhanced sense of smell.
“LET GO OF MY SISTER!” K’aloo screamed, charging at the second raptor. He was halted when Ragh grabbed him.
“Hey, Anuj, what should we do with these two brats?” Ragh asked in a sinister tone.
“Let’s eat them!” Anuj answered. Immediately, K’aloo bit Ragh’s arm, forcing the raptor to drop him. K’aloo then bit Anuj’s left leg and forced him to drop Yuna. As the two raptors hollered in pain, K’aloo and Yuna made their escape.
“I’M GOING TO TEAR THAT PESKY T-REX APART!!!” Ragh roared, chasing after the two children. K”aloo and Yuna screamed in terror as they were chased down by the two raptors, dodging their terrible jaws. The duo halted running as they ran into a dead end, turning around to face the carnivores.
“NOWHERE TO RUN NOW, BRATS!” Ragh growled, approaching K’aloo and Yuna. K’aloo protectively stood in front of Yuna and attempted to intimidate Ragh and Anuj with his less-than-impressive growling.
“Aww, look. The little scamp’s trying to be scary!” Anuj mocked, snarling. The raptor took a snap at K’aloo, only to get his snout bit by the aggrevated T-Rex.
“AAAGGHH! HE BIT MY SNOUT!!” Anuj yelped, backing up. K’aloo prodded Yuna to climb the wall, following suit. Ragh and Anuj began climbing up on the wall, snapping their jaws at the two children hungrily. K’aloo kept pushing Yuna on until the two finally reached the top of the cliff. Ragh and Anuj clampered towards the cliff’s peak, but they were stopped when K’aloo sent a reasonably big rock rolling towards the two raptors. The rock smashed into Ragh and Anuj, sending the two raptors tumbling down the cliff. K’aloo and Yuna laughed as they stuck their tongues out and mocking Anuj and Ragh. Afterwards, the two siblings quickly ran away before both raptors could recover. Getting up from the fall, Ragh angrily bashed Anuj’s head with a clawed hand.
“MORON! YOU LET THEM ESCAPE!” Ragh yelled.
“Shut up! You weren’t paying attention when the T-Rex escaped your grasp the first time!” Anuj countered, rubbing his head.
“Whatever. Dharak’s gonna have our heads if we show up empty-clawed.” Ragh said, running off with Anuj.
~~~
K’aloo and Yuna ran into the forest, smiling with glee as their mother ran up to them from a couple of oak trees. The siblings were picked up in their mother’s warm and loving embrace, remaining cuddled together for what seemed like forever.
Chapter 3
Many years have passed. During that time, a great deal of major changes had occured. Though, most of those changes have to do with K’aloo. No longer a child, he was now a full grown adult Tyrannosaurus Rex. In addition to his intimidating size, K’aloo grew in bulk as well, shown through a muscular chest and moderately beefed-up arms, legs, and body. A row of pointed osteoderms ran down from K’aloo’s neck all the way to his tail like a dotted line. K’aloo’s huge size had made it challenging to squeeze in with his mother and sister in their little den, so he was now residing in a cave that was a couple of steps away from Maua’s den.
It was a cool morning, the trees up above were swaying with the chilling wind in a soothing motion almost like the trees were dancing. K’aloo walked down a grassy path, looking around the area. He heard someone humming and crouched towards the ground, sneaking up on a small bush. K’aloo pushed the leaves aside, revealing a slightly chubby opposum taking a dew shower.
“AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!” The opposum screamed, covering himself with a leaf.
“CAN’T A OPPOSUM GET SOME PRIVACY IN THIS FOREST?!” He yelped. K’aloo picked the marsupial by his tail, dangling him in front of his face.
“Yggo, I hope you know you’re terrible at hiding.” K’aloo said, chuckling. A dragonfly bursted out of a tree with a leaf covering his face, screaming in terror as he flew in a zigzag-like pattern.
“SOMETHING TOUCHED ME! SOMETHING TOUCHED MEEEEE!!” The dragonfly screamed, ramming into K’aloo’s snout.
“Well, Saz ain’t any better.” Yggo commented, removing the leaf from Saz’s face.
“AHH! Oh, it’s just you guys..” Saz said, hovering over K’aloo and Yggo.
“What was so terrifying that you had to go and scream like a lunatic?” K’aloo asked.
“Something touched me while I was hiding! It was dark and I couldn’t see anything. As if hiding in a tree itself wasn’t scary enough. It was scary.” Saz replied.
“Dude, everything is scary to you.” Yggo remarked.
~~~
Walking around the forest, K’aloo roamed aimlessly with Yggo and Saz sitting on his head. He walked into a opening, spotting a decently large lake sitting in the center of a circle of trees. K’aloo laid down on the soft grass just right in front of the lake, watching Yggo perform a belly-flop in the bright blue water.
“Come on in, guys! The water’s just fine!” Yggo exclaimed, laughing. K’aloo simply snorted out steam from his nostrils, laying his head down sleepily.
“Hey, Saz, don’t you wanna take a dive?” K’aloo asked.
“No, no. I’m afraid of water.” Saz replied. K’aloo rolled his eyes, shuffling his body to the left while letting out a huge yawn. Just as he was about to close his eyes, the ground began to violently shake.
“EARTHQUAKE!!” Saz screamed, falling off K’aloo’s head. K’aloo got up, grabbing Yggo out of the water and taking off.
“WE GOTTA GET MOM AND YUNA!” K’aloo yelled, dodging a falling tree. He approached Maua’s den, relieved to see both Maua and Yuna running outside.
“We have to get out of here! This way!” Maua hollered, leading everyone away from the collapsing forest. Up ahead, Toka’s herd was making their escape. As K’aloo and the others made it out, the ground began to crumble and split apart. Everyone began panicking as the earthquake ripped apart the ground.
“OUT OF MY WAY, LEADERS FIRST!” Toka yelled, shoving past the other Hadrosaurs. As if the earthquake wasn’t enough, Dharak had suddenly burst out of the forest with a hungry look in his eyes. The massive Tyrannosaurus roared, snapping his jaws at Toka.
“AAAHHHH!” Toka screamed, backing up. He shoved a random Hadrosaur right into Dharak’s jaws in a attempt to keep the predator away from him. Dharak charged at Toka, only to be stopped (again) when K’aloo rammed into him. Dharak snarled, clamping his jaws on K’aloo’s tail and throwing the smaller T-Rex off him. Dharak planted a clawed foot on K’aloo’s face, growling in frustration.
“STAY OUT OF MY WAY!” Dharak yelled, shoving K’aloo to the side. He turned around to realize Toka and the herd had ran off. Enraged, Dharak turned to K’aloo, who was now recovering.
“YOU COST ME A MEAL! I’M GOING TO KILL YOU FOR THAT!!!” Dharak roared, preparing to charge K’aloo. Suddenly, the ground began to split even more, throwing up chunks of earth everywhere. K’aloo ran past flying chunks of ground and the wider gaps, barely missing the deadly fangs of death.
~~~
Yggo and Saz screamed in terror as they outran a massively growing zig-zag of opening cracks in the ground. The ground opened up right below Yggo, causing the terrified opposum to plummet towards a newly formed ravine. K’aloo immediately opened his jaws and reached out for Yggo, grabbing the opposum by the tail and pulling him out of danger. Afterwards, K’aloo flipped Yggo onto his head for his safety.
“Ow! My tail!” Yggo yelped.
“Sorry!” K’aloo apologized. After what seemed like forever, the earthquake finally ceased, sputtering to a explosive stop. K’aloo coughed up dust, squinting his eyes to see what happened. Whils he was safe, K’aloo immediately realized he, Yggo, and Saz were stranded on the opposite side of the ravine, separated from Maua and Yuna.
“K’aloo! Are you okay?!” Maua yelled out.
“Yeah! I’m fine!” K’aloo replied.
