The irony of MVP discussing retirement? Kim Yeon-koung's thoughts on league reality
"Maybe it's a funny story."
It is now too public that "Volleyball Empress" Kim Yeon-kyung (36, Heungkuk Life Insurance) is considering the timing of her retirement. From the 2022-2023 season, when he returned to the V-League, the keywords that have heated up the last two seasons have all been whether he will extend his active career.
When Heungkuk Life failed to win the 2022-2023 regular season even though it was ranked No. 1 in the regular season, Kim Yeon-koung did not reveal her retirement concerns but expressed her inner feelings by signing a one-year contract with Heungkuk Life Insurance. However, neither he nor Heungkuk Life Insurance was blocked by Hyundai Engineering & Construction this season. After the team finished second and second place, respectively, in the regular season and the championship game, this time, she coolly expressed her decision, saying, "I decided to extend my active career because I wanted to challenge (to win) again."
There is no doubt about Kim's performance. She is still an irreplaceable powerhouse of Heungkuk Life Insurance and one of the best in the league in both ball and water. She was also listed at the top of the list of key indicators in this season's overall attack rate (44.98 percent, second place) and receiving efficiency (42.46 percent, fifth place). There was no doubt that she won the sixth MVP award in the women's V-League, the most in history. "I have always said, 'When I am at the top, I want to retire when I am good,'" Kim said. "(My personal performance) seems to be going in a similar way to what I am drawing."
Kim's goal for the next season is to increase the number of MVP wins in the regular league to seven. This is nonsense. Perhaps, it is related to improving the level of the league. "It is ironic that a player who seeks to win the title and win the seventh MVP has something to do with retirement," Kim said. "It may be funny that a player who is about to retire tries to win the title and aims to win the individual title." He said bitterly, "I hope there will be more competitors next season. I hope there will be more domestic players. I will do my best not to fall behind. That way, we can develop."
Kim Yeon-koung also has complicated thoughts about her retirement. "My friends often tell me what comedian Lee Kyung-kyu said. He said, "You must not retire until even a single person doesn't clap." That is also true. It deserves respect. And I may run until no one claps for me, too. "Isn't this open ending okay?" he said, replacing the simple but inner thoughts.
