Gustavo Petro, Winner of the Historic Pact: Lights and Shadows

Gustavo Petro was confirmed as the candidate on Sunday. He has been marking the elections for several weeks and has been favored.

The victory was won by Bogota's previous mayor and senator of the Republic. The result officially means that he is a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic which that he is aspiring to for the 3rd time.

The overwhelming majority in the polls makes to him being the most representative figure of the Colombian left and a firm candidate to be president despite his controversial plans and ideas on several fronts, including the one on economics.

https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustavo_Petro Petro expressed his desire to adjust the pension system through the creation of the position of a public administrator for pension funds. This will enable Petro to mix the public and private funds to create the form of a "mixed and complementary system."

The candidate has said that in Colombia "we don't have a pension system, but banks have a profit system," so many claim that he will end the possibility of achieving the Presidency. https://www.washingtonpost.com/es/post-opinion/2022/04/19/elecciones-colombia-2022-gustavo-petro-juan-fernando-petro-perdon/ Petro recently stated that he will not abolish the system, but he would call for reforms to pensions in order to provide a minimum income for Colombians. https://www.eltiempo.com/bogota/luis-ernesto-gomez-reacciones-por-su-llegada-a-campana-de-gustavo-petro-674840 Petro also claimed that there's no need to raise the age of retirement.

Another issue that is controversial concerning him is the fact that he frequently promises that he will cease oil extraction when he assumes his office. This has led to confusion among investors as in the market.

Experts anticipate that Petro's idea of stopping exploration of oil could cost Colombia an estimated $4.3 billion in loss.

I also suggest to establish an anti-oil front within the region and around the world. This would move the economy away from fossil fuels. To this I would like to invite Gabriel Boric (the new Chilean president) and LuizInacio Lula da Silva (the Brazilian LuizInacio Lula da Silva), among others.

His position on health issues is also controversial. He is insistent on ending EPS, and replacing it with an preventive model of healthcare that "guarantees individuals' rights and not bankers' profit."

He has also question the independence of Banco de la Republica.

Petro stated that the Bank Board of Directors belonged to the Democratic Center and "What we want is an independent Bank of the Republic (...) it is essential that the Board of Directors is a part of society members," the candidate stated in the middle of the debate.

Invamer claims that Petro is in charge of the voter's intention to vote in the presidential elections.

Also controversial was his idea to issue money to finance government expenditures.

Petro's recommendations include an economy that isn't dependent on fossil fuels, extraction of hydrocarbons as well as mining. Agriculture plays a bigger importance.

He could also implement a tax overhaul that eliminates exemptions, and transforms the concept of minimum wages by real wages based on income or capital.
