It has developed into one of the top universities in the nation, known for its rigorous academic standards, cutting-edge research, strong ties to business and industry, and unmatched athletic prowess. Loughborough's ascent to prominence as a global school is largely attributable to Dr. Herbert Schofield, Loughborough College's 35-year Principal, who had an entrepreneurial vision and steadfast tenacity.
In 1909, a small Technical Institute was established in the centre of Loughborough, providing technical, scientific, and artistic courses while also connecting inhabitants to nearby resources for additional study. In order to build the current University campus, land on the Burleigh Estate had to be purchased. Due to the high standards maintained by Loughborough College of Advanced Technology and its predecessors, Loughborough was granted its charter in April 1966. It was the first establishment of its sort in the Country when it was still known as Loughborough University of Technology. The institution changed its name to Loughborough University in 1996.
Other notable occasions include the reunions with Loughborough College of Education in 1977 and Loughborough College of Art & Design in 1998. The site's current 523 acres of splendour are the result of three consecutive land purchases made in 2003, 2006, and 2010. In 2015, Loughborough University expanded to the London Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
