Macau casino revenue jumps in August, nears pre-pandemic numbers
Macau casinos reported an impressive increase in gross gaming sales (GGR) in August, with a big rebound in the gaming industry. The Game Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) reported revenue growth of 14.8% and 6.2% year-over-year to $19.8 billion ($2.47 billion) compared to July figures.
Approaching pre-pandemic levels:
Recent surges in gaming sales have brought Macau closer to its financial performance before the pandemic hit. The sales reached $24.3 billion (US$3.03 billion), or 81.5% of the GGR recorded in August 2019. The resurgence signals positive momentum for the industry, which faced unprecedented challenges during the global health crisis, according to the Asia Games Brief.
August's growth is not only a sign of recovery, but also a reflection of its seasonal benefits. The month benefited from a calendar of five days on Friday, five days on Saturday and four days on Sunday, providing more "weekend" days compared to July's 12. These increases in weekend days have traditionally been correlated with an increase in visitor turnout and gaming activity.
The road to recovery, however, faces new challenges. Recent crackdowns on illegal currency exchange operations by mainland and Macau authorities have raised some uncertainty. These regulatory measures aim to curb illegal activity but have had ripple effects on market dynamics.
According to a report by Inside Asian Gaming, Seaport Research Partners analyst Vitali Umansky said of the situation, "We believe this round of crackdowns is negatively affecting the inflow of funds into Macau and certain individuals have postponed their visit to Macau."
While he expected these challenges to continue to affect the GGR in the short term, he expressed optimism that the market would stabilize, saying, "However, we do not expect the crackdown to ease and the liquidity in Macau to be significantly impacted in the medium term."
Comprehensive Annual Growth Rate:
Looking at the broader period, Macau's GGR in the January-August 2024 period was cumulative at $152.1 billion ($18.9 billion), up 33.4% from the same period last year. However, the figure still trails pre-pandemic levels by 23.3% from 2019, indicating that the recovery is strong but not yet fully back to pre-COVID-19 levels. 프라그마틱 슬롯 사이트
Morgan Stanley analysts reportedly gave a rather conservative outlook, expecting a slight month-on-month rise in August's forecast. Actual earnings beat expectations by 5.23 percentage points, giving stronger-than-expected market performance. "August's earnings also performed better year-on-year, with a gap of 5.76 percentage points over 9% expected by the investment bank," analysts noted.
