History
The University College of Buckingham (UCB) was founded in 1976, and Queen Elizabeth later granted it university status by a royal charter in 1983. It is still the only private university in the UK as of May 2016. Between 1993 through 1998, Margaret Thatcher, the university's chancellor, served as the institution's nominal and ceremonial leader. She also laid the university's cornerstone. As a result, the Vice-Chancellors of the institution were Lord Beloff (1913–1999), Professor of the University of Oxford, Sir Alan Peacock, Economist, and Richard Luce, now Lord Luce, Minister of the Arts. With the introduction of student loans in 2004, the number of students in the UK grew.
