Divers Watch Buyers Guide

When you say a watch is waterproof you are saying that water cannot breach the case or the seals around the function buttons
Water resistance is gauged in static, non-moving water
The manufacturer is saying that so many meters below the surface of still water, the pressure of the water alone will not breach the case or the seals
But if you were to dive into water, or take a spill while water skiing, or find yourself in strong moving water, the pressure of the water hitting the device would be much higher than the static pressure under which the watch was testedFor that reason, no watch can be honestly described as waterproof
Water is potentially hazardous and the enormous range of its hazards cannot be catered for at reasonable cost
The US Federal Trade Commission requires that watches sold into the USA are described as Water Resistant and not Water Proof.
This hasn't stopped online retailers describing their watches as Waterproof because < waterproof > is the keyword that buyers are typing into the search barIf the Google search spyders have logged a retail website for the keyword < water resistant watch >
then Google is only going to show that website to searchers who type < water resistant watch > into the search bar
But if buyers will only type < waterproof watch > into the search bar then Google will only show them websites that have < waterproof watch > on them
so if you are a retail website and you want those buyers then that's the keyword you have to put on your siteHowever watch manufacturers require their retailers to show ATM ratings
The standard atmosphere at sea level is 1ATM
A watch described as 5ATM is water resistant to 5 atmospheres, or about 80 PSI. This translates to a water depth of about 50 meters3 ATM - Rain and splash resitant.
5 ATM - Swimming without jumping from a diving board. Not snorkling or diving
10 ATM - All the above plus snorkeling in shallow water. Not high-diving.
20 ATM - All the above plus high-diving
200 ATM - Diving watch waterproof to 6,600 feetThe higher the ATM rating, the more you will pay for the watch
but in order to cater for hazardous events you should buy the highest ATM rating you can reasonably afford
If there are two devices that meet your needs but one has a 10ATM rating and one has a 5 ATM rating, don't think "I'm only going to use it for swimming so I don't need the 10ATM
Think "Anything can happen. Can I reasonably afford the better watch?"
Jumping into the pool and ordinary water sports can put a beating on your watch (over time) as tough or tougher than deep water divingThe buttons on a watch are difficult to seal
The more functions there are on a watch, the more buttons there are, and the more places water can enter into the mechanism.
So a Water Activity watch needs to be a metal-backed watch with minimal functions and minimum buttons
Do not press any buttons when the watch is under waterMoisture can appear on the dial if a watch suddenly cools down.
After a while this moisture will disappear again
However, steam is a different issue
Steam can get in to a watch where water can't, and it can do damage
You shouldn't wear a waterproof watch in the bath or while taking a hot shower
And if you keep your watch on while washing your hands, use cold water READ MORE https://ideas.mediumcolour.biz/
