Exclusive Blue Sapphire Stones

The appearance of each sapphire is what will determine its quality. Cornflower Sapphires and Royal Blue Sapphires are considered top-quality amongst other blue sapphires, and they can both be equally expensive and highly sought after.

Sapphires' blue hue reflects the sky's every shade from blazing afternoon to velvety midnight. Blue sapphires are valued primarily by their color. Iron and titanium are the trace elements that contribute to its blue hue. A pure sapphire can be transformed into a blue sapphire by adding a trace amount of iron and titanium.

Given sapphire's status as one of the popular gemstones, the trade has come up with unique names to portray the stone's color such as cornflower blue and royal blue. However, judging its color is more than what meets the eye.

In addition to hue, tone and saturation are also included. The three components of color are: hue; tone; and saturation. We will be able to better understand the differences between cornflower and Royal Blue.

Hue is the primary impression of a colour. Basic hues consist of red, yellow, orange green, blue violet purple. Both types blues are the exact same shade, if you look at them.

Hue can further be divided into its primary and modifier colors. Sapphires are blue. Modifier colors are the second impression. Often, 'slightly' or 'strong' are the main terms to describe the strength of the modifier. As an example, if the sapphire has a slight hint of violet in it, we would call it'slightly purpleish-blue.'

Cornflower Blue Sapphires can often be seen in lighter hue of blue and possess a tint of violet due to its lighter tone. Blue Sapphire stone tend to be a bright, vivid blue.

Color: The brightness and darkness of a hue. The color tone is measured on a scale of 2-8, with 2 being the "very light", and 8 being the "very dark".

The cornflower is the source of the name for cornflower blue sapphires. The Cornflower Sapphires, as shown in Photo 3 below, are scaled from 2-5 along the color tone range, with a light to medium-tone. The color is soothing and pleasing. It is hard not to say that the cornflower sapphires attract admirers like bees to the flowers.

Royal blue sapphires have tones that range from medium-dark through to dark. They are rated 6-8 on the scale of color tones. The dark, deep blue color may appear black. Kashmir sapphires - one of precious sapphire's rarest - have a blue that is 'true,' with a velvety tone.

Saturation: the hue's intensity. Saturation is considered the most important factor that determines the price of the sapphire. Cornflower Sapphires in low saturation will appear to be a light blue with a hint if violet, while those in lower saturation colours may appear as vibrant violet. For both cornflower and royal blue, saturation should be at least strong to vivid range to be valued as high quality gemstones.

Someone who loves a bold, vibrant style would prefer royal sapphires. They have a deep blue saturation. Whereas, cornflower blue sapphires, with light to medium blue saturation, would be more preferred by someone who prefers a more soothing style.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Both types of blue have their beauty properties to be appreciated. You should choose the color of your sapphire according to these three criteria: Hue, Tone, and Saturation.

The best way to know which colour you best suit you is by looking at a wide selection of sapphires to make a comparison. The light plays a major role in choosing the right sapphire. Be sure to check out its colour under different lighting conditions.

As well, you can ask your jeweller to see if it has a certification. To be able to call a sapphire cornflower blue, or royal-blue, it needs to be certified by an accredited laboratory. The major laboratories, such as Gubelin GIA SSEF adhere to strict guidelines when it comes the use of colour terms in trade. These laboratories create reports that describe the hue, modifier and saturation for sapphires. Only sapphires which meet the quality criteria set by laboratories are given the trade name "royal blue".
