Notch Asks Community For Permission To Track Player Data In Minecraft
Mojang's Notch is a smart person not just in game design terms but also in the management of the company's 20 million or so Minecraft players. Game servers The designer has posted an open poll on his personal blog to discover whether his cuboid constituents would feel comfortable with the company collecting various types of anonymous data from its players.
Mojang currently tracks players only when they logs in to the game. Notch's proposal is to also keep track of "non-private data" such as the length of your gameplay session and your PC's OS and whether you're playing multiplayer or single mode and whether you're playing with the client or through the web applet. The community will then have access to the collected data "as normal."
"Naturally, the data sent will be completely anonymous," said Notch. "So it wouldn't contain any session information or your user name, and it doesn't provide any sensitive information you wouldn't want to divulge." We're amazed that this kind of data isn't being collected to be honest. If you're part of the Minecraft nation, you can make your voice heard by voting in favor or against anonymous data collection here.
