Minceraft, A Post Mortem
We have tried adding secrets to the game before. Small things, like obscure crafting recipes or bizarre conduct, and every little thing always will get discovered immediately. Minecraft No matter how obscure we make a brand new characteristic, it's totally documented inside hours of a new release. This is awesome, and an important example of how devoted some Minecraft gamers are, nevertheless it also means we can't actually cover something good in the game even if we tried.
So a while ago, I did some intentionally obscure code in the title screen to switch two letters round, making it say "Minceraft" (previous operating gag, there's even a "minceraft" mockup t shirt design we did) as an alternative of "Minecraft" on each 10000th game launch or so, and no person found it! I used to be so blissful about that, I finally knew something about the sport the players didn't know.
Flash ahead to this GDC a number of days in the past, I am doing an interview with Chris Hecker, and he asks me if there's something no one has present in the game, and i say sure. I should've mentioned no, however I mentioned sure. Then I start getting emails and tweets about it, folks start getting excited, and realizing how minor the secret is, I strive to inform folks it is a very minor secret. That seems to gas the flames. A reporter from a well-known gaming site desires to run an article on it, and that i inform him not to. Getting folks hyped up about an intentional typo isn't actually a great approach to spend everybody's time.
There's numerous cool stuff to learn from this, although. One is that it Is feasible to hide stuff in plain sight, but as soon as folks go in search of it, they are going to discover it. Another thing is that folks appear to wish to get excited over issues, even in the event you tell them it's nothing main.
I'm impressed and relieved you discovered it. I won't touch upon it outside of this subreddit.
