Storing supplements in correct way is very important. Many people do not think much after they buy product. But if not stored right, supplement can lose power. Even if quality is good when you buy, it can become weak later. Potency depends on how we keep the product from air, light, heat, and water. These elements can change the formula and make it less effective. It is not only about expiry date. It is also about how we handle the product at home or when we travel.
Heat can damage many ingredients in supplements. Some people put their bottles near windows or in kitchen shelves where it gets warm. This is not good. Ingredients like Melatonin can break down when it stays in hot place. If melatonin becomes weak, then it will not help as it should. It is better to keep it in a place where temperature stays normal, not too hot, and not too cold. Also, never leave supplement inside car, especially in hot weather. The change in heat levels can destroy the strength of the formula.
Water and moisture also make problems. In rooms like bathroom, there is often steam from shower. This goes into air and can get inside supplement bottle. If moisture goes inside, the capsules or powder may clump or become soft. Sometimes it can even grow bad bacteria. Some ingredients like TMG trimethylglycine can pull moisture from air, so it is very sensitive. Even if you close the bottle tight, if air has too much moisture, it still gets inside. For this reason, always keep bottles in dry area and use silica packs that come inside the bottle.
Air is another thing to worry. When bottle is opened again and again, air goes in. Inside air there is oxygen, and oxygen changes the structure of some ingredients. This is called oxidation. This can make supplements work less or become useless. For example, if product has oils or natural herbs, air will make them lose strength fast. It is best to close the lid tightly after each use and avoid keeping the bottle open for long. If you use travel boxes for pills, do not leave them open for many hours.
Light is one more danger. Light, especially sunlight or strong room light, can break down sensitive nutrients. It can make ingredients less active or change their chemical form. Some bottles are dark color to block light, but still, we must keep them in cabinet or drawer. Never put supplement on window ledge. Products like Melatonin are known to be light-sensitive. Once light damages the compound, it may not give the sleep support as expected.
Some people put supplements in other containers for daily use. This looks simple and saves time, but it can be risky. If you take TMG trimethylglycine daily and put it in a weekly pill box, it may stay open and catch moisture or air. If the storage is not air-tight and dry, then the supplement can lose power. It is better to take out only what is needed, not all at once.
