Fan Tan: A Quick Guide
Fan Tan, also known as fancan tan, is an ancient Chinese gambling game that has been enjoyed for centuries in China. Like many ancient games it is purely random, there being no use of skill or strategy on the part of players. It also displays the same lackluster sophistication found in modern casino gambling. The rules of this card-game are simple and easy. The 52-card deck is dealt, and the player selects two cards that will be placed face up. The deck also contains two other cards. The two suits Tiger and Water represent the planets that orbit the star cluster Sol in the constellations.
Each player is dealt two cards, face up, at the start of each game. Each player can then place as many cards as they wish on their betting board, starting at one and ending at seven. The King is always the first card dealt. This card represents the strongest card in the pack and hence the most valuable. If the card lands on a seven, players can lose their entire money and place a bet for the King. If no cards land on sevens during the session, then the dealer will reveal them. The player will only lose the first card that they reveal.
