From Kim Kardashian’s curtain bangs to a sculpted bowl cut for Charlize Theron, these pros (all chosen for their visible client roster) shared their top 2023 moments.
Haircuts
From sculpted ponytails for Margot Robbie at the Met Gala to curtain bangs for Kim Kardashian, pink lipstick and milk nails to celebrity makeup brands and viral TikTok tutorials -- 2023 was a colossal year for beauty. To celebrate, THR tapped some of Hollywood's most renowned hairstylists, makeup artists, nail technicians and groomers to share their top moments from the past year.
Whether it's her red carpet clients (including Jennifer Lawrence, Zoe Saldana and Dakota Johnson) or editorial and advertising shoots (for Chanel, Longines and Pureology), Jenny Cho is in high demand with her preternatural calm and unwavering attention to detail. Her top moment was landing her first American Vogue cover in October, which she styled with Jennifer Lawrence. Cho also prepped two clients for this year's Met Gala, Everything Everywhere All at Once's Stephanie Hsu and Vanessa Kirby, both wearing Fekkai products. She also teaches classes for beauty brand Virtue Labs.
Hair Color
The beauty industry is at a max of dynamism right now. It’s a time when clients are demanding more from their stylists than ever before. They want a bespoke shade and technique that’s uniquely theirs. The best beauty pros know how to give them just that.
Whether it’s a sleek and shiny platinum blonde or a vibrant red hue, the right color can make all the difference in a client’s look. With the right mix of shades, your clients will feel confident and empowered.
That’s why it’s important to choose a name for your salon that’s both memorable and distinctive. The name should also reflect the beauty services you offer and appeal to your target market.
Hung Vanngo’s skill with glam bombshell looks keeps him in demand with Hollywood’s A-list. He preps Karlie Kloss for events, posts behind-the-scenes pics on Instagram and teaches his 4.1 million followers how to do their own hair via TikTok tutorials (his guides on getting Kim Kardashian’s curtain bangs and the coveted ponytail have both racked up millions of views). He also works on editorial shoots and advertising campaigns, and this year, he styled multiple clients for the Met Gala including Cara Delevingne, Julia Garner and Devon Aoki (wearing YSL makeup and Fekkai products). His top 2023 moment: a sculptural ponytail for Robbie Williams for the L.A. premiere of Barbie in July.
Facials
For clients looking to get a little extra boost of beauty, a facial is an excellent option. Facials can help treat a variety of issues, including wrinkles, dry skin, dark spots and acne. They can also make the skin feel rejuvenated and refreshed. Our estheticians are trained to provide a range of treatments to meet your needs.
Whether it's a dramatic lip or a spiky wig, these pros know how to bring out the best in every face. Their glam squad skills keep Hollywood's A-list turning to them, and their behind-the-scenes Instagram pics and video tutorials keep 4.1 million followers hooked. Hung Vanngo prepped no fewer than four stars for this year's Met Gala, including Karlie Kloss, Cara Delevingne and Devon Aoki.
Waxing
Offering waxing services can help you stand out from competitors and increase your customer base. Be sure to choose a name that is unique and easy for customers to remember. Lengthy or complicated names may be difficult for customers to type accurately, which could lead to errors and confusion.
Hung Vanngo's ability to create glam bombshell looks with pouty lips and intense eyes keeps him in high demand among Hollywood's A-list and his 4.1 million Instagram followers. He prepped Karlie Kloss for the Met Gala, Selena Gomez for the VMAs and Cara Delevingne for the Cannes Film Festival.
Henna Tattoos
Henna tattoos, also called mehndi or heena, are natural-looking and completely temporary body art. The leaves of the Lawsonia inermis plant are dried and crushed to create a paste, which artists use to draw intricate designs on the skin using a combination of oil, water and essential oils. Henna has a long history of use in many cultures and is typically used during special celebrations, weddings and other events.
Heena is known to have conditioning properties that may improve the strength and shine of hair strands. It is also believed to be helpful in reducing dandruff, and some hair products contain it as an ingredient.
When a person gets henna applied, the color stays on their skin for one to three weeks depending on how quickly the area is washed and how dry the client's skin is. As with a regular tattoo, it's important to protect the design from water and any other harsh chemicals.
Henna is traditionally applied to the hands and feet but can be drawn anywhere on the body. It's often popular at music festivals and other events, where guests get less elaborate versions of traditional henna patterns or try out a design they might be considering for a permanent tattoo. Always ask a henna artist what kind of product they are using; black henna contains paraphenylenediamine (PPD), which is considered a contact allergen and can cause serious skin reactions in some people.
