The catalog of bumper removal instructions.

@farkand

Hello! My name is Alexander. I am the founder and lead author of the project remont-bampera.com, which is entirely dedicated to the professional removal, restoration, and painting of car bumpers and plastic body parts.

For over 10 years, I have been working with automotive plastic parts. Behind me are hundreds of models, a complete understanding of all types of plastic, and well-established repair techniques. My goal is to pass this experience on to you, so that you can either repair a bumper yourself with high quality or professionally assess the work of technicians.

General procedure (bottom to top):

Preparation:

  • Drive the car onto a pit or lift (or turn the wheels fully to one side).

  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal (if there are airbags in the bumper or a headlight washer system).

Wheel arches:

  • Unscrew the screws or clips securing the bumper to the fender (usually 2–4 on each side).

  • You often need to bend back the fender liner to access the side bolts.

Bottom of the bumper:

  • Remove all bolts/clips from underneath (attachment to the engine splash shield and subframe).

Top of the bumper (under the hood):

  • Unscrew the bolts (usually Torx or 10mm) along the top edge of the bumper where it meets the grille and headlights.

Removal:

  • Gently pull the sides of the bumper away from the fenders (they are held by clips).

  • Pull the bumper toward you (along the vehicle's axis).

Caution: If the bumper won't come off, check — you may have forgotten a bolt in the wheel arch or one in the center under the headlights.

Connectors:

  • Disconnect the wiring harness plugs (fog lights, parking sensors, headlight washers) before completely moving the bumper aside.

Most common issues:

  • Fender clips: They are fragile. Before pulling, you can lubricate them with silicone spray or WD-40 (but carefully to avoid getting it on the paintwork).

  • Hidden bolts: Often found under the emblem, under the tow hook cover, or where the bumper meets the headlight.

  • Headlight washers: If the hoses are old, they may tear off. Prepare plugs in advance to avoid spilling washer fluid all over the floor.
