Minecraft creator Mojang plans to launch a spin-off game

Minecraft maker Mojang is planning a spin-off game that is based on its wildly popular block-building title.

Called Minecraft: Story Mode, it is an episodic game that takes place within the familiar Minecraft world, but it will introduce some new characters into the setting.

Telltale Games, which has previously produced many episodic titles, is making the game.

The first episode is expected to be released in 2015 on consoles PCs, consoles Macs and Android devices.

It is unclear what the experience will be like. Mojang has released a short browser-based game called Info Quest II, which explains what it could look like.

In a blog post, Mojang said the game will be developed with the support of the Minecraft community.

It was created to assure players that Story Mode is not violent and bloody as previous Telltale games. Recent Telltale games include The Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands and games that are based on Game of Thrones and zombie thriller The Walking Dead.

"Telltale's game will have a similar feel in its tone to Minecraft itself," said Mojang, "though it's a totally original design that is influenced by our game."

The news of Story Mode comes soon after Mojang released a completed version of its Scrolls card-based game of magic fighting.
