How to use this template

  1. Keep the format consistent — Use the same Yesterday, Today, Blockers pattern every day. Consistency makes standups faster because everyone knows what information to bring.
  2. Write blockers as actions — A blocker should lead to a next step, owner, and target time. Otherwise it becomes a repeated complaint instead of something the team can resolve.
  3. Move deep discussion to the parking lot — Standup is for coordination, not problem-solving every detail. Capture longer topics in the parking lot and handle them with only the people needed.
  4. Review yesterday against today — Look at yesterday's plan before writing today's plan. This makes drift visible and helps the team notice when work keeps slipping.
  5. Close with follow-up owners — Before ending, confirm who owns each follow-up. A two-minute recap prevents the same blockers from appearing again tomorrow.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best format for daily standup notes?

The classic format is Yesterday, Today, and Blockers for each person. This template adds team focus, blocker resolution, parking lot, and action item sections so the notes are useful after the meeting too. Keep entries short and outcome-focused.

How long should a daily standup take?

A healthy standup usually takes 10 to 15 minutes for a small team. If it regularly runs longer, move detailed troubleshooting to a follow-up conversation. The notes should help the team coordinate quickly, not create a second meeting document.

Should every team member give an update?

For most agile teams, yes, each active contributor should give a short update. People who are away can be marked absent, and stakeholders who only listen do not need a full update. The goal is shared coordination across the people doing the work.
